Sandow's a badass.
As for his lifting style, I imagine he did a lot of bodyweight and oly style lifts.
As for his chest, bench pressing was not popular back then. Lots of gyms only had bars, iron plates, and dumbells -- not much in the way of racks or benches. Oly lifting was also a lot more popular then as well.gympunk - "Thank God my wife hasn't ever been bothered by cum shooting around."

These measurements seem to make more sense. Steve Reeves at 6'1" had 17.5 to 18.5" arms (depending on when you measured them. 17.5" in 1947 and 18.5 in 1952). Zane, while bulking upto a rare 210 lbs had 18" arms at 5'9". Sandow does not appear as big as either Reeves or Zane, forget about the other modern bbers.
To me, he looks about the same size as Mike Tyson, albeit with a slimmer neck and a much slimmer waist. Tyson had a 43" chest, 34" waist and 16" arms and weighed 210 lbs in his prime, before going to prison. Considering that he was also about 1.5" taller than Sandow and probably has a bigger bone structure, Sandow was probably 185 lbs or so, with 42-44" chest and 16-16.5" arms and 29-31" waist.

Sure Zane was 185lbs. But the 18" arm claim was made when he was bulking. If you check the article that mentioned it (available here: http://www.musclememory.com/showArticle.php?sh670124), you will see that at that time his weight was 205-215lbs. I dont buy it that he lost 25-30lbs while cutting and still retained 18" guns.

THe OP's link does not work anymore.
Here is a great site with lots of Sandow, Pandour and other old school strongmen before roids.
Some good strength training books on that site..... scanned books from the early 1900's :-0
