Fruit? Good or Bad...
Hey Everyone....
I just want to know how everyone feels about eating fruit when leaning out!?
Are 100-150g Strawberries ok to have in the AM with oats etc, What fruits should not be consumed during this time, would having 50g of banana in my shake for breakfast be slowing down my fat loss... also i just wanted to know what every considered a "FREE" vegetable... Can eggplant be eaten with no limitations? x

With your past eating disorder, I wouldn't limit things so much, esp. fruit. You seem to be somewhat disordered still in your thoughts and attitude toward food. I would caution you against a figure competition right now until you are FULLY recovered...contest prep can do bad things to you mentally!

I avoid almost all fruit except low GI fruit, such as tomato/salsa w/ my chicken. If your overall goal is fat loss, with my client at least I really minimize fruit. Its very "healthy" but what is "healthy"? some fat people are healthy, but are they lean? You must distinguish. Breakfast I would stick with more complex carbs like 1/2c oatmeal w/ 1 scoop whey protein, very simple on paper, very healthy as well, no guess work. Once in awhile I will switch that up so I don't get bored, I can fry potato w/ olive oil and egg whites in the AM. But usually the fact I'm allowed carbs is enough for me to love my breakfast. Fruit is great when you need it, try to define fruit in your mind as a substance that will give instant energy ONLY when you need it, if you don't need it, the energy will go into reserves, i.e. Body fat. I prefer my main source of energy to be stored body fat when I"m dieting personally.

I posted a link to an article in my blog recently to an article from AOL and Prevention Magazine - there has been a ton of new research surfacing about carbs that never turn to fat - bananas were one of the foods mentioned as being the best for losing weight. As for the other fruits, I have to admit, I have a sweet tooth, and dried fruit is my snack of choice for staying away from chocolate and such. I also eat a fruit smoothie post workout fairly regularly. In my opinion, and it is just my opinion and many on here will disagree with me: fruit=plant, plant=good, therefore fruit=good. :-)

Wow, so much misinformation! Fruit can help weight loss along and weight gain depending on how you use them. It also can provide fiber so you can poop, and let's be honest here, everyone loves to poop. Good fruits to try out are bananas, grapefruits, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, rasberries, and for you I suggest apples. Here is the deal. Try to have at least two servings a day. For me, I use them for weight loss, I limit my two servings a day to 1/2 cup. For you on the other hand I say go ahead and eat 150 grams of strawberries, or hell, eat half an apple in the morning with your oatmeal.
Different people with different needs. You will still lose weight. One cup versus 1/2 cup is not going to noticably slow down your weight loss.
Free veggies are anything not considered a starch, or a carb. So no potato or corn. Free veggies are like those boring flavorless greens. But again I need to caution your thinking here. Think of it less as food and more as fuel. Think of your long term goals and what foods are going to "fuel" you to that end point. If it is to lose weight think high fiber, low carb. Cauliflower, broccoli, even carrots. Purple cabbage is fun too. Sweet tators and yams can be used in place of a carb along with veggies you know.
Congrats on getting well, and I wish you the best of luck. Remember this and live by it. Eat more to lose more. It's about the only thing scientifically proven to work

Good! Nothing bad about fruit. I eat 2-3 servings per day.

Fruit is neither "good" nor "bad." For me, it's simply a matter of does it fit in my daily macros and is it high or low glycemic? On low cal/low carb non-training days, I don't eat fruit. On higher cal/carb training days, I do eat fruit.

Moderation.
Moderation in all things right? Some body builders eat complete carbs and fruit till noon or 1 pm...then it's protein, veggies, and fat for the rest of the night.
If I want a banana I eat 1/2. I haven't noticed the fruit really getting in the way of my weight loss...nearly 35 lbs lost so far!!! whoo!
However, I have noticed that when I give up fruit completely I lose fat quicker.

I never limit my fruit or vegie in take - just keep it with in my calorie limits. The body not only needs certain macros but vitamins and minerals etc... And your body just simply cannot absorb supplemented vitamins as well as the more natural sources of vitamins such as fruit and veg. I think the GI thing can get a bit over done as well. As long as you are eating balanced meals you should be fine. I eat fruit and veg with just about every meal.. yesterday I had 3 apples because I was on the run, as well as a banana and a peach (you know - along with some protein and fat i.e. cc and nuts etc), then I had a huge plate of vegies for dinner along with chicken etc... I can guarantee that I will not see any bloat or weight gain because of it - any my bowels are very happy

I think fruit are an important and healthy addition to any diet. I dont think in general anyone should be worried about eating 50 calories worth of strawberries or banana. If it fits into your caloric requirements eat it. No food, especially a natural food should be thought of as 'bad'. I do understand that when people preparing for a contest, in the final stages of their diet may cut out fruit or dairy, but not everyone does this also. And if you arent trying to get down to 8% bodyfat I wouldnt even worry about this anyway. I love fruit, I love strawberries and bananas and I eat them daily. I think in the end everything still comes down to calories in and calories out, that is the basis of everything. (please no one give me the example of eating 1000 calories of twinkies..lol I hate that comparison).
So eat your fruit, your eggplant. All good stuff!!
