Is it necessary? No.
Could you see maximum benefit sooner? Probably.
The reason you've heard so much from both sides is that it really doesn't matter a whole bunch. If you don't load, you will eventually hit a maximum concentration of creatine, but if you do load, you'll just get their sooner. The biggest drawbacks to loading are a) some people experience gastrointestinal discomfort when they consume large amounts of creatine, and b) loading will use more creatine thus being slightly more expensive (although straight creatine is very inexpensive at under $20 for 1kg).
So there you have the run down, and you can make your own choice from there.
