I read an article in Muscle and Fitness that suggested taking casein and whey protein post workout produced greater muscle mass than either one by themselves. Also they did a study comparing hunger after each. One group drank a whey protein shake and the other drank a casein protein shake. The group that drank the casein protein shake was able to eat more 60 minutes later than the whey shake group. This is interseting and I was wondering what you guys thought about using whey and casein post workout?

Not really
There is about 8 grams of protein in 1 cup of milk, 80% of that protien being Casien.
So thats 6.4 g of Casien/Cup of Milk, Now to get those 23 grams of caisen you would get from 1 sc. of On casien. You would have to drink over 3 n 1/2 cups of milk or about 29 ounces. Now with 29 ounces of milk you can imagine the amount of Fat and Milk Sugar you will be taking in, def. not worth it. Much rather get my casien from On Casien.
No that is the point, the point is that if you combine them together you will get the immediate amino acid flow from the whey but will also receive a constant flow from the casien. Your body can only absorb so much at one time, so instead of just trying to jam 50 grams of whey in and only getting in 1/2 you use 25 g of whey for your immediate replenishment and 25g of Casien for a constant flow. AS you were saying the casien might slow down the absorption of some of the whey but most will be absorbed before the casien.Last edited by Adawg4929; 03-13-2008 at 12:24 PM.

I've read a couple of articles too on whey vs. whey/casein blend after WO. I just started doing this for a week now and will continue to monitor any changes if any. For giggles, I mixed 1 scoop of champion nutrition whey with 1 scoop of muscle milk lite with water along with either waixy maize or straight dextrose.

Well, I just finished a tub of SP250 along with Xtend during and after but I had zero stomach issues. SP250 is a very good product.
Now, I am trying something different by drinking a scoop of whey before WO. Again, you have to see what works and i want to see how my body will respond to this and to the post WO blend.---- COUNTRY MIKE APPRECIATION CREW ----

You are taking the waxy 20-30 minutes before the protein..right? Also, 40 g (1 scoop) isnt very much...you would probably be better with 2 or 3 scoops.
I generally avoid casein post workout as it forms a lump in your stomach and leaches out protein over the next several hours and it also slows down the absorption of whey...not exactly what you want PWO. The purpose of the PWO meal is to get nutrients to your muscles as fast as possible. Have another meal with slower digesting proteins about an hour after your PWO meal if you are interested in staying anabolic for a longer amount of time. I would go with a hydrolysate post workout..I know of an extremely high quality hydrolyzed casein that actually doesnt taste like ass, PM me if you want info.Last edited by MedicineWheel; 03-13-2008 at 01:21 PM.

The entire advantage of waxy maize is the high molecular weight which allows it to be pulled down into the gut immediately as it is ingested (rather than floating around in your stomach for a while like malto, etc.). Ingesting waxy with protein actually lowers the molecular weight and negates the entire advantage of taking it.

Isnt that the point that whey digests fast and casein is a bit slower? So you stay catabolic for longer and a more even amount of time? I just read some articles one in muscle and fitness another in some other magazine about whey/casein protein mix giving better gains for post workout protein over whey or casein by themselves. Also in muscle and fitness there is a study that says casein protein will make you hungrier than whey protein 90 minutes after ingesting.
Also I hate doing two shakes I also just mix my carbs in with the protein, creatine, bcaa, vit e, vit c and r-ala
