Preventing Injuries

I was thinking today I know that when you workout after an extended break the muscle soreness that is felt is common atleast till you get back into a lifting mind set. The answer I am looking for is if something is still sore say for instance I worked out my chest pretty throughly last Monday and come next Monday if it still has a soreness to it, is it ok to go ahead and work it out anyway?

I really don't want to negate any progress I may have a chance of making simply because I pushed too hard and in the same light I don't want to injure myself further or hold off when I shouldn't.
