Cost of living increase
Do those of you in the blue collar professions
Expect a cost of living increase,
Even if you are at the top of the pay scale?
This year looks like I wont be getting an increase at all
I don't expect a merit raise, because i am at the top of my pay scale.
But IMO a cost of living increase should be mandatory.
Maybe i am turning to my Misc brothers and sisters to help
me find a silver lining to this whole monstrosity.
thoughts?

mandatory cost of living increase would hurt businesses during bad times, they'd probably lay off far more people (or would you prohibit that and further mess everything up )

I haven't spent enough
time in the civilian
workforce to have
formed a valid opinion.
I do think it should be
a mandatory part of
a yearly salary bump regard-
less of your income though.

That's better than many people out there.
Since retiring from the military I've come to realize I can survive on quite a bit less than I thought.

my friend this year got a increase of 5% and was extremely pissed because he felt he did alot for the company. so he wrote them a letter saying that he wants a 22-26% increase atleast and told them why he thinks he deserves it and why the company needs him and the things he can do and does for the company that others cant. the company then responded and gave him a 21.66 % increase without even fighting it. he is actually pissed now cause he thinks if he asked for like 30%, that he would get that.

I wouldn't stress too much..I just checked US dept of labor stats and we're running 2-3% annually last year and this year. I'm going to guess 2.2% or so this year.
So if you're making like 50K that's about $1200-$1500 ..so....your Cell-Tech supply for the year might have to be trimmed down.
Although, if you have a car that's crappy on gas like mine is those gas price changes they're expecting this year are gonna kill you no matter what.
I wouldn't mind a COLA tied to the CPI for the earlier year that's mandantory...sure there's a ton of issues with that however.

If you are a state or federal employee you are in pretty good shape. It is not uncommon for your salary to adjust a few percentages yearly with the cost of inflation. But if you are a minimum based worker or employer, tough economic times can hit you hard.
The worst situation to be in during hard economic times is a small business owner that relies on peoples disposable income.
With my work people are spending less and less than they use to because it is considered disposable income for my goods and services and daily expenses and essentials are on the rise in peoples daily lives.
With record gas prices, foreclusures, food increases, etc. usually the only business that really makes record money in these times is Walmart. They are considered a major discounter and people will spend their entire paycheck their for the savings. Wal-mart often times has their best periods during inflation when people have only so much income they can spend outside of a deep discount outlet.
As a small business owner, employees expect me to pay them more to keep up with the rise in daily living. That is understandable and fair if I have more income coming in or more of a break on the price of the goods and services I provide from my suppliers. But that isn't happening due to their increases also.

I agree a cost of living increas should be mandatory and some companies will do this. The company that my wife works for gives a cost of living raise every year and also a merit review raise if applicable. She works for a non-profit company so the have to spend the money anyway.
I do not get one, I just get a merit review raise in December. The way I see it if it was mandatory then the company could increase their rates by the same %. Of course this will never happen because companies are always looking for ways to cut cost and have a green end of the year.

The average 30 year old in the US is making 38K/year. You are doing fine. You just started your career so of course you are not going to get paid as much.
Make a budget and stick to it.
