Question about Hip Abductor
So... I was working out shoulders and legs today (usually work our shoulders with chest but was in a hurry yesterday) and I usually do a lot of compound exercies for my legs but I like to throw in the hip abductor as well. Anyways, I was working out my inner thighs and on the second squeeze I seriously felt a sharp pain down there. Oh my goodness it hurt! It hurt so bad, I could barely close or open my legs to stand up from the machine. I was fine on any other exercise so when I went back to it and tried to do one rep, it started to hurt so I stopped. I even moved it down to 130 and then 100 lbs but still couldn't do it.
This was at 160 lbs. Last time I had done 4 x 10 @ 160 lbs with no problems, so I am not sure what happened. Maybe I pulled a muscle in my groin area? As I am typing it feels just a little sore.
Thanks!

Did you warm up the muscles in that area before doing 160 lbs? Did you stretch first?
I don't think that many of the compound movements hit those inner thigh muscles directly, but I could be wrong.
Definitely DON'T work it out again until the pain has stopped. Maybe massage the area daily and when it no longer hurts do light stretching to see if there is still pain.
If I were you I would lay off it for month or so, b/c I am not keen on injuries.
My husband once got a hernia in his groin area.

Yes, I was pretty warmed up and I always stretch, which was weird. I also do plie squats and sumo squats, lunges, etc. I'll probably take a break.... last thing I need is a hernia or injury! Thank you for your input.

I have an interesting relationship with that machine. At times, I get a similar pain, like a groin pull but maybe slightly higher. Other times, nada. I just start slow to see which day it's going to be then work accordingly. It has never bothered me outside of that exercise. I suspect that it's a muscle tightness issue. I do this last on leg day and I'm thinking the muscle was worked maybe during sumo squats, or something, and just gets tight. Or over worked. Smaller helper muscles can lag behind. But I'm just guessing here. I'd be concerned if I had the pain outside of the exercise and it persisted. Or if there was a lump.
Just wanted to underline that this started at low weights so as I've increased I'm always careful. You're just now seeing this and wasn't expecting it. I don't doubt that soreness could persist.

Yeah, I think you may be right... this was the first time I felt pain and it was only with this exercise. But I literally felt it right in my you-know-where! I did this exercise second to last so I am wondering if this was the problem. I'm going to layoff for a week or two and try again at a lower weight. Hopefully, it doesn't come back.

if you are still feeling pain in the morning - serious pain where you can't open close your legs, take yourself to the doctors
you want to ice it up to help prevent swelling, brusing and pain...
do this for an hour - apply ice for 5 min's at a time with a 10 min break
It's happened to me once where the machine kinda got the better of me and I wasn't concentrating instead of a controlled open it kinda ripped my legs apart and the pain hit
it wasn't serious thank goodness but it did hurt like hell
since then - since I've been taking weight lifting more serious I realised that particular machine never really did anything for me any way so I don't use it any more
