Melatonin--How much is too much?
The dosage is 1-3tablets. I've always had trouble falling asleep; sometimes I just don't sleep at all. Anywho, I find 3tablets isn't enough, and that I can only actually get to sleep off these pills if I double the recommended dosage--- I sometimes take 6-8tablets. It totally zonks me out, which I love. Is this ok? Or is it too much? & could you over-dose on melatonin?
Thanks a bunch!

non-lethal.. I don't know if studies have claimed side-effects from high doses..
I mean the body make about 0.1mg.. so depending on the amt in the caps.. you could be going pretty high dosage..
Too much of anything can;t be optimal for your body.. but it might not screw you up or anything like that

I've once taken 3mg oral, and then 1mg under the toungue and then finally snorted 1mg to fall asleep...it was well worth it, one of the bests sleeps of my life and my sinus's were clear, and no bad sides. So to answer your question 3mg every night will not hurt

the effective dosage is in the MCG range, so taking multiple 3mg pills is just dumb. its not a sleeping pill, it is a pill that will help you maintain a normal sleeping pattern.
OP if you are taking that much, then it isnt worth taking. look into valerian root or something that will "zonk you out" as melatonin is not supposed to act like that.

i have found that taking more than 3mg is just good to raise my tolerance to it. So I took a break and only take it occasionally and 1 tablet works fine and helping me feel a bit drowsy and get some decent sleep (specially with some ZMA as well)

well said...
Its a hormone that naturally works to regulate your circadian rhythm.. to get a more "full" sleep
not a "sleeping pill"

Except that falling asleep involves involuntary swallowing which in the salvia contains the bodies natural melatonin...?

and? external melatonin should be dosed minimally. this is suggested by the man who first introduced melatonin as a sleep aid.

Absolutely right. I have a couple of studies (I would have to dig for them) that states that 0.3mg (300mcg) has basically the exact same efficacy as 3mg but does not cause morning drowsiness.
I am not quite sure why they ever started producing 3mg pills honestly.

There was a study done by a company who sold Melatonin in 3mg tabs. That study found 3mgs to be ideal.

I used to cut a 3mg pill into 1/4ths and it would knock me out.

Not good... I'd talk to a doctor about getting something stronger. Also try to look at the meds as a temporary solution... Valium is a personal fave of mine.
Good luck

Haha wasn't it the same company who did a study showing that 3000 miles is the maximum distance you should go before an oil change?

Are you one of the people that buy into 10,000 mile engine oil?

Haha not just yet. But the recommended oil change interval on my car from the factory is around 5000-5500 miles (can't recall).

There are some studies out there with dosages as high as 10 mg with no adverse effects. But, you guys are right. For sleep, generally <1mg works well.

OP states she takes 6-8 pills, and that a serving is 1-3 pills. You do not say what dose the pills are. I have seen 1 mg and 3mg pills, big difference especially if you are taking 8 of them.
Anyway, I have taken 3mg pills, 1 a night to help get my sleep back on track and it worked great. Best sleep ever. If I need to use it again I would go with the 1 mg because 3 mg worked great but I gained a tolerance to it quickly.

i have some 3mg pills myself, which will make my eyes a little heavy and burn, no big help for sleep. it'll just make the conditions right for sleep.
now i'm not promoting the use of cannabis.... BUT smoking a j will release melatonin, so takin a 3mg pill and taking a few hits would do the trick nicely and "zonk" your ass to sleep.
a better solution and much better one would be GABA and 5-htp (griffonia seed). this does a much better "tiring" effect and really improves the quality of sleep i've had recently. problem zonked.

... if you are a stressed individual and lots on the mind. Don't expect melatonin to be the end-all to cure-all. Take a look at the stress levels and work at eliminating this (if it is stress that keeps you from falling asleep).
