Broken thumb :( look out legs!!

Really sucks, been having some great w/o since I got laid off. Than yesterday at wrestling practice the last hour we decided to treat the kids since they have been working hard. We played DodgeBall. Well at 1 point I was actually taking a shot at my son when 3 balls came flying at me I tried to avoid them the best I could but one of them just caught my thumb. It hurt right away I thought it was just jammed but doc visit today (pain was terrible) and xray shows fractured thumb.

So this sux but never stop right! so look out legs and cardio hell for the next 4 weeks.

I even tried to lift before I went to the doc but there was no way to much presure and pain.

I've broken both thumbs (different occasions). The second one was wierd because it was in a soccer match, and I couldn't remember how it happened. Dr. asked howI did it, I didn't know, just that it happened between the whistle at the start of the match and the one at the end. I had it narrowed down to one 90 minute time frame but that was it. I mean how do you break a thumb playing soccer anyway? At least wrestling makes sense. Is it going to be casted or are you just in a bird cage.

Dang, sorry about the thumb! That's a tough break. (Sorry, couldn't resist...)

Looks like you'll be stuck working on:
Legs
Abs
Cardio
Back (hyperextensions, planks and machines)
You probably can't do squats, but you can do leg presses and hack squats.
Calves, calves, and more calves
Hmmm... I wonder if you can do shrugs in a hack squat machine...

Looks like you still have quite a few options. Get well soon and do what you can in the gym.

Nice, I wasn't even thinking back.. I also have a cheater blue thing(forget the name of it ) for squats so I might still be able to do it just lighter than I normally go. Calves are my strong point I love to train them and drive my frined nuts since he can't get his to grow. lol

When you experience an injury that limits your workout ability you have to find something good in it somehow. Back in 1997 I had shoulder surgery that limited my ability to do any chest or shoulder workout for about 3 months... up until the surgery I was also limited in my ability because of the pain I was experiencing. During that time I instead focussed on improving my back and legs which ended up a good thing because my shoulders were always too overpowering. The logic worked! A week after the surgery I was in the gym doing squats on the Smith machine with me arm in a sling and doing leg presses, etc. My legs became much stronger and larger in the process.

turn something bad into good.

You have to get creative. I think you can still work chest and shoulders, but using machines and you can progress - without putting pressure on your thumb.

Think about it. You can do cable crossovers, pec-dec (use either palms or wrists), thumbless military either on machine or Smith. As for pulling, for biceps and back, you could buy some good straps or hooks and work the cables.

Your doc probably would not recommend any of that, but it is something I would at least explore to try and maintain.

The break is at the lowest part of the thumb so I cant even make a fist or any preasure in the palm causes pain. So cables are out. Worst part about all this is I work out at home so its finding exercises I can do at home with my equipment. Kind of hard to go get a gym membership when I don't have a job.

Going tomorrow to get a cast. maybe with it on I will be able to pull something off.

The blue thing is a "stingray". Hey I've been getting some really good advice on one handed stuff because of my little bicep problem. It's mostly throwing related, but might help for a bit. Have you ever done dumbbell snatches, or really heavy dumbbell push presses?

Sorry to hear that. You will survive. Well, maybe you can get creative once the cast is on and secure. Just don't over-do it.

So this sux but never stop right! so look out legs and cardio hell for the next 4 weeks.

I even tried to lift before I went to the doc but there was no way to much presure and pain.
Getting hurt sucks for people who love working out
