For abs, obliques and hip flexors in one - you could try twisted crunches with the opposing leg fully extended and just off the floor.

This puts a lot of tension on the whole area and if you hold at the top of the movement even for a few seconds, you'll feel it the next day

I do 3x a week - some say more is okay if you've the endurance established. Personally I find them boring so have to make myself stay to do these at the end

Check out this thread - everything you've ever wanted or not to know about abs...

The second post in that thread talks about some lower ab exercises.

I didn't go through the whole thread, but one exercise I came across elsewhere goes like this:

Start in the position of a knee push-up. Keep your arms straight and unmoving, and instead "push-up" your hips so that your body looks like the top position of a regular push-up. Lower your knees back to the ground and repeat for reps. It also works out the lower back, which needs to be as strong as your abs. An inbalance between the two can cause pain in the weaker opposing muscle (which is most often the lower back).

The best ab work you can get is through heavy compound exercises. I only train my core area directly once a week. The rest I get from compound movements. Also the abs are one sheet, there is no lower or upper. However you can produce better overall ab stabilization with various exercises. Putting a mix of lower back and core movements in added to some direct movements can really spruce up your abs strength. Though you can not spot reduce, for definition you must achieve a lower body fat.

As far as training frequency, no more than 3 times a week. Abs can take higher repetitions yes, but the recovery rate should be the same if involving a good program with compound movements.

A couple of things about abs:

First, there are definately upper and lower abs that can be emphasized. The abs have at least 2 main innervations, and have been shown via EMG to be activated differently by different exercises. ( I see the "can't train lower abs" repeated often, and honestly don't know where it came from. Even the previous school of thought about human muscular activation "contiguous innervation" acknowledged that the abs had multiple innervations (like the pecs) so had distinctive anatomical sections. Anyhoo...)

Second, how you train your abs will give you different development. If you use weights on your abs, you will make them bigger....and the abs WILL NOT reduce in size much or atrophy as much as other muscles.

Most people want a tight stomach, what many call "toned"-the product of the development of the low threshold "tonic" or ST muscle fibers.

These are trained with slow, high rep low load exercises, done frequently...just as was instinctively done by bodybuilders for years. In fact, this guy:

was known for doing 1000 roman chair sit ups and 1000 leg raises BEFORE his workouts.....6 days per week.

Anyway, the point is that you have control over how you look to some extent.

A good lower ab exercise is the "seated leg tuck". This is a good beginner lower ab exercise, and a good one for people with "thick" abs-to avoid more size.

Something to try to do, when training lower abs is to CURL the torso. If you do the exercise from the hip only, you will work mostly the hip flexors. Think of lifting the hips, not just the legs.

Edit: Good picture of leg tuck

Key point-keep upper body curled so it looks like a "C" from the side.
