Thanks for the warning. I always hit the exercise bike for 5 minutes before squating, but I was starting to wonder if dong this was hurting my lifting. I was thinking that I may be using up the glucose in my muscles. I will continue to warm up before squating.

Ooooooooooh sounds uch:
To follow your lead - on Tuesday I was late to the gym, missed usual NO Ex and felt like a 65kg weakling (oh I am...).
Decided that this was feeble and so carried on struggling with my routine...got to MP and started to wobble halfway through...stopped twice and forced the last two sets on willpower. Felt something twinge in my back and still feel like I've been punched between the shoulder blades two days later.
Lesson - when my form sucks - disengage ego

You'll never catch me doing squats without stretching my groin first. Been there, pulled that.

WARM UP
|
I did that sort of thing a few years ago. I did squats and rackpulls in the same session. Without proper warm ups. I felt a snap above my hip, but I kept pushing. It was painful to straighten up. Long story short, I was out of work for two days with heating pads on my back, and out of the gym for two weeks, walking like a stereotypical caveman (apologies to the Geico cave guys ).

To the OP; do you have any thoughts on whether just squatting with really light/no weight would be a better warmup for squats than a few minutes on the treadmill or bike....or not?
After all squatting is a very different kind of movement than those other two things. Why not warm up for squatting with actual squatting?

That sucks and real sorry to hear about any injury, but it doesn't seem like a warm up issue per say, after all if you weren't warmed up after the 135x5, 225x10 and 275x10 then somethings very wrong.
Just sounds like an oh chit injury but warming up is good advise none the less.

I need to keep pounding that into my head as well...Stretch & Warm up those muskles. I have a real nice mag resistance cycle i like to hit for 15 prior to doing legs/squats. It is when I'm in a hurry I neglect this. Hope you heal up real quick!!

When I don't perform warmups I am paying for it for days. I go through an extensive warmup followed by dynamic stretching and some light squatting before performing the worksets. The other day I cut back on the warmup and now I am a bit more sore than usual.

I think you're right. I've started doing about a half-dozen warm up sets starting with just the bar before I hit my working weight. No injuries yet! (Fingers crossed, knocking on wood, etc...)

Being new to the squats, and learning to do them ATG I noticed your back really needs to be warmed up, infact as a beginnner my back was the weak point in the squat, as my legs could do more, but you really are only as strong as your back. I don't have a indoor bike here at home so I found that doing a few sets of laps running up and down the stairs and some jumping jacks loosens everything up before doing the warm-up sets. I found the warm-up to be equally as important as the work sets. Also, I've been trying to pay close attention to the way my body feels and I've notice that the meals I eat afterwards have an impact on soreness.

Hope you recover soon.
I don't warm up on a treadmill but I stretch and do 20 reps of squats with light weight to warm up.

First off....I like empty bar slow motion squats for warm up.
Second....Thanx Fitty for being a little slow on the button. I needed to print off some fresh sheets for the bottom of my bird cage. The face of Ahmadinejad of Iran was getting old and the Monkey looked like a good replacement.
