Protein Sources Thread (non-meat)
I thought this might be a good place for us to put our sources of protein, especially for those of us who are either vegetarians (several I've noticed here) or don't eat a whole lot of meat (me).
Anyhow, I do eat fish and the rare chicken, but I think the majority of my protein comes from cottage cheese, eggs (whites for me, cholestrol issues), and vegetable protein sources.
I eat a ton of Boca Burgers. Yes yes, I know they're processed/pre-packaged, but they do have pretty good macros for their calories:
I buy the vegan version: http://www.bocaburger.com/product_meatless/1.html
for one burger; 70 cals, .5g fat, 6 carb, 4gfiber , 13g protein. (of course when I eat them I usually eat two or three!)
I just found these in my supermarket. I don't usually buy Morningstar farms because they're not as high protein as Boca Burgers, but these meal starter faux chicken/beef strips had a nice nutrient breakdown, too:
http://morningstarfarms.com/cgi-bin/...971&company=23
I've thought about using TVP, but it'd involve a lot more cooking & experimenting in the kitchen than I'm currently willing to do...
Beans of course have protein, but it seems to me if you're trying to up protein specifically, the carbs to protein ratio can vary...
I've thought about tofu, but I'm clueless on what to do with it...
Anyone else?

You eat rare chicken , j/k this is a great idea LeilaM, yes I'm a vegetarian (ovo-lacto) so getting some new ideas would be great.
My list is pretty standard I eat TONS of cottage cheese, I swear I'm going to turn into a big curd. Also eat quite a bit of eggs (mostly egg whites), these two are my main source for protein.
Also Whey protein shakes, milk, cheese(rennet free), yogurt and nuts. Even though nuts aren't a complete protein source, majority are lacking lysine, but I get that from eggs, milk and cheese.

Question on rennet-free cheese, by the way- you mean like rennet from calf stomach lining (yes folks, this is where it comes from, cough), or microbial rennet, too?
I make cheese -- like paneer at home, do you? It's v easy...
DO you avoid soy stuff? I know there's some controvery on it, but I tend to eat a lot of those...
Beans are great, I can do some wild stuff with those-- but the ratio of carb to protein (not as much protein in them as I'd like!) tends to meddle a bit with my macros (currently trying to keep carbs only slightly higher than protein, like say 140g protein/day and 150-190g carbs)
Maybe eating to cut and eating to bulk can affect which protein source to go for?

I used to be a vegetarian and had the following in my diet:
Tempeh (fermented soy beans - very tasty by the way...I used to cook it in a non-stick pan chop up and have in salads, or just have with veggies...also nice for breakfast)
Tofu (I ate a lot of the firm tofu, just cube and add to stir fry veggies)
Nuts (Also a great fat source: cashews, almonds, macadamias, walnuts, pistachios, brazil nuts, etc)
Veggie burgers and sausages
Soy Milk
Soy yoghurt
Soy protein powder
Beans/Legumes (also a good carb source: black beans, chickpeas, kidney beans, hummus, lentils, butter beans, etc)
TVP (just soak in hot water, and cook like mince and add whatever you want to the mix to flavor
Hope these help!

Quinoa (grain) is quite high in protein.
Legume, ie., lentils have a higher protein to carb ratio than beans.
Since you're willing to eat fish and chicken, I'd make sure to get at least 1 serving of each of those per day.
When it comes to soy, I prefer tofu that I make to the Boca or Morningstar products, but I do use those on occasion, too.
Another really yummy option is Greek Yogurt. I get f-a-g-e brand (bb.com blanks it out if I spell it all together) in the 2%. It has 17g protein and it is like eating soft serve ice cream imo. I put whatever add-ins I am in the mood for -- nuts, apples, sf chocolate syrup, etc. It is completely natural so you also get all the good probiotics from the yogurt, as well.

Leila - Would you share your paneer recipe? Can it be made successfully w/ skim milk? I've seen recipes using whole milk but haven't paid too much attention to them because I wont use whole...rather spend my calories on something else!
Thanks!

Yes, I mean like calf stomach lining, I kill microbes for a living so no issues there.

Yes, I avoid it due to the phytoestrogens, I believe it to be counterproductive to trying to build muscle. I used to eat small amounts of it, but no longer eat any.

totally agree with this, I'm trying to drop bf atm so my carb intake is very limited and instead eating higher fats. But when "bulking" I still limit my intake of beans and starchy carbs (beans and rice), Imostly get my complex carbs from oats/oat bran and sweet potatoes.

I'll post the paneer recipe up in the recipe thread today, will post link as well over here so it isn't lost if this thread disappears later on
What brand(s) of cheese have microbial rennet? I've heard (not sure) that a lot of cottage is made w yogurt and rennet as their starter cultures?
Good stuff on the lentils. I cook with all types of lentils all the time (red, brown, yellow, channa dal-- which is actually small chick peas, etc)
k. now I am hungry
Edit in: link to paneer recipe: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showpo...&postcount=255

Look for kosher cheese. It won't be made with rennet.

oh yes no meat and milk! I didn't think about that.. so kosher cheese is strictly KD?
Here's a site for anyone interested in cheese making (I used to do it all the time, sigh) and finding supplies. It does have non-animal origin rennet as well:
http://www.cheesemaking.com/
This is a pretty exhaustive source on making fermented stuff (mostly cheese, but has a few others times). This is basically where you can learn to make.. anything:

KD? Not sure what you mean? Kosher Dairy? Kosher dairy products will not have rennet in it, because rennet is considered 'meat'.

All Cabot cheeses are made w/microbial rennet, too.
Leila - Wish I could rep you for the recipe. Thanks!

I'm asking if that's the symbol/letters I should look for on the package. Sorry

If you eat fish and chicken, then you might as well eat meat, unless you are Hindu or something. I swear to God I will never understand what goes through a vegan's head sometimes. If it is for ethical reasons, then I can respect that, but how can you eat fish and chicken, how can you wear leather sneakers, how can you sit in a leather chair, etc.
I eat grass fed beef. They are treated alot more humanely than lot cattle.

This isn't a thread on vegetarianism and ethics, it's a thread on non-meat protein sources. Not everyone likes meat or wants to eat it. Live and let live dude.
My Contribution:
Faux Meat
1) I agree on the MorningStar Farm Strips, both in Chicken and Steak (with a slight preference for the steak). The macros on those are great!
2) Yves Veggie Deli Slices (Turkey, Bologna, etc.): four slices has 13-15g of Protein (Turkey has 15g), 4g Carbs
Dairy
1) Fa-ge Greek Yogurt, one cup has 20g protein, and 9g carbs.
Other Things
1) Trader Joe's Soy Pitas - 1 serving has 11g of protein and 18g of carbs (not bad at all).
2) There are a lot of low carb breads, such as Pepperidge Farm, that has 8g of carbs (3g of fiber, I believe) and 5g of protein per slice. Pepperidge Farm Whole Wheat is better than PF Multi-Grain, in my opinion.
