    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muY0LmeMl9s

it says in the video at around second 33 that he backlifted 6,270 pounds.

it's a very old lift that old time strongmen would do (we're talking aurthor saxon), late 1800's early 1900's it was more popular, basically a 2 or 3 inch range of motion lift where you're bent down kind of like a donkey raise with the knees bent and you have to lock them out, yes he did lift 6270 on that lift, anderson was a freak!

Yeah, he reportedly did that. There is a lot of controversy surrounding it, but in the end it comes down to having to take someone's word for it.
Some lifts have more evidence than others, but unless you are there yourself you're taking someone else's word as to what happened.

In Paul Anderson's day there weren't a lot of set standards as to what constituted a squat or a bench, so it's likely a lot of his lifts were not a large range of motion.
However, the back lift doesn't seem out of the question. It's such a small range of motion I'd be willing to be there are people that could reproduce the feat if they tried, but I don't think anyone ever does backlifts anymore. Kind of like leg presses, rack lockouts etc--a lot of weight, almost no range of motion. After seeing WSM competitors walk around a course with 1,000 lb yokes on their back I think that a lot of guys would be capable of lifting several thousand lbs a few inches off the ground.

I suppose Paul Anderson's squats may have been done in this sort of manner (not sure how much weight is being used in the video?). Still though 1000 is seriously impressive like that and raw.

    not at all my friend.
-first off the clean is probably 60% technique and 40% raw power (might have been exagerated but you get the point)
-secondly there is alot more to a clean then legs, hips exct (not sayin thats al you use in a squat but thats the majority of muscle groups) you need a huge amount of both upper and lower back strength to clean heavy.
    - and lastly he is a big guy he probably sux at balancing.

and im with everyone else i doubt he squated 1k raw im guessin 800ish or less

    His technique sucks.
I doubt he trained his clean as much as modern weightlifters, whose only goal is to clean more weight.
Modern weightlifters don't train the squat as hard as Paul Anderson probably did. Once they reach a certain point there's no need to squat any heavier.
Look at how easily he stands up with the weight, its obviously a ridiculously easy front squat for him.
I don't think he squatted 1000lbs either, but he was probably pretty close. The rumors were probably not started by him, but probably by his admirers.

His bio book written by Randall Strossen has lots of clear, clean photos and all of his lifts were fully documented. BTW, he was the last American SHW to win the gold medal at the Olympics back in '56.

People have looked at his backlift and done some simple math. It ended up having to be a ridiculously heavy platform and the weight for each person standing on it was high as well. Also he's sometimes credited with one arm press 300 x 11
    380 x 1
    squat 12000
    jerk press of about 545?

Where'd you hear he squats 900+ pounds? As someone else stated, in oly lifting squating much higher than you clean isn't really helpful.

    I disagree....dude was insane strong

he didnt really seem the type to go for fake plates etc

    ---

and as we have mentioned in other threads...his squats would EASILY get 3 whites today

ask me again why im not super impressed with a non walkout double ply 1000lb squat......because Paul did it long ago, lol...no gear, possibly no roids

dude could squat 900 and pause to smile at the camera, lol

Did you watch the video of his olympic lifts? Very explosive leg power. Also look at his hips! He was totally made just for squatting!!!! Massive torso as well. I do not think 1000 is incapable by him especially when you read up on him a little more about his training. I read he had done a 1600 quarter or half squat I dont remember which but that is a lot of weight to handle.

Yeah, who would have the balls to try those lifts today with no gear on. Without the gear, you would see these 1000 lb squats today going down to about 750 lbs and Anderson would have the last laugh.

I love Anderson's technique of picking a goal weight and starting the cycle with that weight but only doing partials at first but slowly adding more rom until he was doing a complete rep with his goal weight at the end of the cycle. Anderson knew that you can't squat 800lbs (for example) by doing reps with 600lbs. That is why he used this odd technique. Of course, his joints paid for it later in life.

Paul anderson was a genetic freak .

He trained squat mostly , every other day .

You cant watch his olympic lifts as example on these records people are discussing here . He retired at the age of 24 i beleive , but he wasnt his strongest before his 30`s .

Paul said himself 1200 pounds was his best squat, and he knew what a proper squat was , going deep in every clip i have seen of him.
(not saying he actually did 1200 pound squat RAW, but he did some amazing feats) .

The clip you see of him in the hole with the cans were a good idea, every time he filled the hole more and more so in the end he did it full range.

He actually didnt beleive as much in warmup, so there are stories of him just picking up 700 pounds and doing a few easy reps. Yes that does sound like a freak to me .. :P

His back squat of 6000 million pounds was a guinnes record which means he had to have certified people there to check.

But also have a look at Angus MacAskill 7`9" tall .
    http://www.macaskill.com/GeneralTall...us/angus3.html

    interesting read.
