New Olympic Bar Problem Or Not?
I just Bought this new hampton olympic bar rated for 700lbs seems all fine but on one side of the bar, it doesn't rotate smoothly, it catches on one spot and stops it from spinning. I asked the dealer and he said it just needs to be broken in.
Any one know if it just needs to be broken in or is the bar flawed.?

Are you sure this wasn't a used car salesman?

Hopefully you paid for the bar with a credit card, this way if the guy refuses to exchange your bar, you then put the charge into dispute. Sleeves are designed to spin FREELY on an Olympic bar. Try swapping the sleeves from one side of the bar to the other first (you're going to need a 10mm allen key or set screw socket). If after tightening down the set scew, the sleeve 'binds' in any way while you try to revolve it, then theres a problem in the machining. Swapping the sleeves may help, but if it doesnt, tell the guy he sold you DEFECTIVE merchandise, and he either has to exchange it, or refund your money. If you do an exchange, tell him to check the bar first before he sends it out, that is, if he's not just some 'warehouseless' internet middleman. Good Luck

Along the same lines, I have some olded bars that spin...just not as freely as i would like. can I squirt some penetrating fluid in there to make them spin effortlessly?
Thanks in advance.

He flat out LIED to you. A rotating sleeve doesn't need to be broken in, that's absurd. Exchange it for another bar.

You didn't buy that bar from Fitnessoutlet.com did ya? That sales guy you have there sounds like same guy from Fitnessouhouse.com.

I got the bar from a place near my home in Ventura Ca, I will go back and have a chat with this guy. I'm also in the process of geting an opinion from Hampton to learn more and build my case. I had a bad feeling when he told me it just needs to be broken in. Cant people just be honest.
Thanks for info forum mem.

He may not have lied to you maliciously. Some salespeople just don't know what they are talking about.
Disassemble the sleeve, clean it, re-grease it, and put it back on. I've had similar issues with my barbells and cleaning it has resolved the problem most times. If that's not the problem, you've received some pretty good advice so far.

Don't try to fix it. Take it back and exchange for a bar where both sleeves rotate freely.

I tend to agree. If u just bought it, why try to fix it? Just take it back for a brand new one. Let him work on it, to try to pond off to some sucker.
After all, u didn't buy it to work on it, u bought it to lift some olympic plates!!

I agree with everyone else, swap it out, unless your like in the middle of nowhere and you need to travel hours to get there, in which case I also would tell you to take apart the end, clean regrease and repack it to see if the cause was something simple and minor.
