Trainers....
Has anyone had Great Success WITHOUT a trainer?

Nope, mine is fantastic. That said I know many people who have done it on their own and have achieved amazing results.

back double digits ;)
I've used personal trainers before, but more of showing me how to do stuff and teaching me technique and exercises. I don't hire them to keep up with me regularly or to come up with new routines or to "keep me company while I trot on the treadmill." There's some folks who NEED trainers, I've had a few people tell me they wouldn't go regularly without them.
Some folks do better using one, though. I think it depends on one's motivations and personality types. I think anyone can be sucessful at this if they go about it the way that works best for them...

I've always found that silly. I use my trainer for form, new exercises, and weight training only. I got the cardio thing down, in fact, I could probably kick his ass on cardio any day of the week.

The only trainer I "hired" was actually an ex olympic lifter. I wanted him to teach me the techniques

supersizing me
Absolutely. When I first got into lifting I took a couple of weightlifting courses offered at the Univ. I was attending to learn proper form/technique. Then after 1yr of training, I decided to hire a PT because I wanted to really gain more strength and size and despite the fact the guy I hired was also a bb'er, he was adamant about me doing light weight and high reps (12-15 range), so, after 4months of that, I dropped him and just read as much info I could get my hands on and experimented with many different wo routines until I found what works for me.
I'm all about freethinking, so reading from many different sources and finding a few knowledgeable people to bounce things off of was very helpful in guiding me, then it was just a matter of experimenting and really paying attention to how MY body responds to the diff. exercises/routines/rep ranges, then I keep what seems to work and modify when I hit a plateau.
My Events:
1. Tour de Prairie Century. bike ride--June-07
I DID IT....100miles of road...3500ft total gain/loss...on my mountain bike FTW!
2. Mountain Madness 1/2 marathon--July/07
Done, time sucked..but I wasn't last *helpful tip: not good to do sprint intervals day b-4 1/2 marathon.
Next up:
3. Mt. Werner 5mi vertical (2,180ft) run Aug/07
4. Jelm Mountain 11mi run--Sept/07 (I WILL conquer the mountain this year!)

Nope. My trainer is excellent. The first session I had with him the weights I was originally lifting on my own doubled, some even tripled. But I only have a trainer for weights, not cardio, like LeilaM said before, I also don't need someone to keep me company while doing cardio. I can handle that on my own!

I've had great success without a trainer. I joined a weight training club in 7th grade and my instructer told me some basic things, but other than that I've learned everything else on my own through the internet, magazines, and a fitness show I used to watch really early in the morning. Twelve years later I still do it on my own. In actuality, I've had people ask me to train them.

with or without
If you are very discipline, and willing to take the time to learn proper form..nutrition etc sure you could become your own personal trainer..I think they even wrote a book on the subject but sure with all the information on the web all the books available you can do fantastic.

I am actually a trainer (one of my many jobs) and I have a trainer and my trainer has a trainer. You definetly could do withouth having someone stand next to your treadmill and watch you run.....you could do that on your own. The reason I have a trainer is because I want to build muscle( and compete) and sometimes it's difficult to increase in weight if your on your own. I only use my trainer for WEIGHT training....I do all my cardio on my own. And she(my trainer) uses her trainer for the same reasons as well as she does a lot of fitness modeling. You can definetly learn it on your own..the nutrition/technique part...but I have to admit that even though I studied this at college, I still had A LOT to learn from trainers/bodybuilders who had LIFE/GYM experience( years worth)....it was better than some of those textbooks I read. Don't get me wrong..I think Trainers are AWESOME depending on your goal...and you don't need to hire a trainer five days a week either......some are expensive. Before I hired a trainer to take me to the next level...I did all my training and owed all my weight loss results to myself and the books I read.
** You can also hire a trainer to teach you the techniques and then you can go from there**
