I have been trying to incorporate cardio into my routine. I have spent several years building strength with no real cardio. I started walking a couple of months ago and finally got bored with it (no challenge). A couple fo days ago I walked over to the college practice field and started walking the field twice then jogging once (its a 65 yard field). I progressively sped the jogs up until I was running, then finished with an ALL OUT sprint (yes I know it probably looked like a speed walk but it was ALL OUT for me). It felt GREAT! I was a football player most of my life and it felt incredible to run again. I went yesterday and did a little more on warmups and sprinted 3 times. Only pain was in my feet soles (arches I am sure) and my hamstrings are sore. I will take a break today and run again on Dec 31.
I am still training for my powerlifting but just got to feeling like I needed a new challenge.

I was doing it back in the late summer/early fall. It killed me, but it does feel great after doing it. And yeah, if you haven't done it in a while, I'm surprised you're not really hurting. I'd been running 2-3 miles fairly frequently, but sprinting let me know I wasn't pushing myself hard enough from just running, as I was always sore the next day

I guess it might not be "sprinting" like you referred to, but I incorporate a HIIT routine into my cardio from time to time. During the sprint portion of it I am going at about 85%. Fifteen minutes of that is more taxing to me that 30 minutes of cardio. It does feel incredible - especially when you finish

I know what you're saying. I weigh 300# at 5'11" and running is something else at this weight. Actually a fst run is easier on my legs than trying to jog. I don't know why this is but it definety is. I was very surprised that my wind comes back quite quickly. I noticed today that shin splints are hurting pretty bad so this is definetly going to take time. I am going to have my wife time me in the 40 once the field dries a bit and just see where I can go with this.
I appreciate the responses fellas.5'10" 285#

John, it's normal for your knees/legs to hurt more when jogging vs. running. I learned this earlier this year. Shin splints can be painful. Have someone watch you run and see if they can classify you as a "forward or backward leaner" or run pretty vertical. They actually sell running shoes to match your "type", and good running shoes are a MUST. It took my son a couple of months to talk me into getting a decent pair of shoes, and it really surprised me how much difference it makes. Good luck.

Hey thanks dbx, I will get someone to do that tomorrow. I want to get my speed and quickness back (or as much of it as I can) that I had when I was younger. I can lift a house now but can't run around one HAHA.
By the way, I have told several people about your signature line and they find it funny as hell. A lady was once telling my wife about her daughter's rabbit dying and she wondered what she would tell her daughter. My wife said tell her "if you had loved the rabbit more it would still be alive" HAHA, its just a joke of course (that was for you PETA members).5'10" 285#

I starting doing sprints about a month ago. I hate the monotony of cardio, I think I have too short of an attention span for it. I find with sprinting I don't get bored as easy, and is easier to give it my all. So 2 days a week I go up to the virtually empty Racquetball courts in my gym and sprint lines.

Some weeks ago I started doing 2k runs before and after working out (wanted to work into 5k).
Initially, I only suffered some (expected) shin splints which went away after a few days, but after app. 2 weeks of this my knees started to REALLY hurt. Badly (Bursitis?). I've then stopped the running, and reverted back to rowing, stepmill, wave and treadmill (max inline walk) for cardio. Took another 2 weeks until the knee pain finally went away.
So: no running for me.

Aquilius
