Was humbled at the gym today
I started my new workout that my trainer fixed for me. It was chest/shoulder day. The chest workout was great but doing this workout I had to drop weight to get it done. When the shoulder workout came I was on my 4xroutine and could only get 5lb dumbbells up. I couldn't pick up my arms after the work out. I thought I was pretty strong for my age. NOT All these other guys were in there using much bigger dumbbells, stuff like this can make a guy say screw it, but I'm not gonna. I'll just keep pushing along with my Fisher Price "My first dumbbell" set until I can lift something that's a little more respectful. I talked to my trainer and did the weight in/BF% on Wed. I'm embarrassed to say that I weighed in at 264 and my BF was 29.4%. THIS WILL CHANGE While he knocked my cardio from an hour to 40 min, he has now put me on the rowing maching. I really don't like this guy. LOL
Another update in a month

That line is classic.
Don't worry, things will get better and you'll get stronger.

Everyone's got to start somewhere. I bet in a month you'll have added a lot of weight to your lifts.

Having injured the shoulder in the past, I know that F/P weights are the only thing I was able to lift. Hell, tall cold ones were even tough. You'll get better.

When I started, my one rep max on bench was 115, we all start somewhere.
Oh, and my shoulder lateral raise wasn't even 5lbs cause I had a surgery to reattach my rotator cuff which was severed and attrophying for 4 months prior.

Your "FP" weights, are better than that guy who's sitting on the couch doing nothing but going through his second bag of potato chips. Keep at it and don't be discouraged.

You have a great sense of humor and you should pat yourself on the back for being in the gym today. You have a lot of people here supporting you and rooting you on. Don't get down and NEVER GIVE UP!!!

I can relate to your story too. Jan 4 2004 my weight was 287 43% BF. Now I weigh 227 with 24% Bf.
Bench max........Jan 4 was 140 and now its 340 1 rep and work out regularly with 300.
it just takes time, heart and desire.
Great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep it up.

When I first started weightlifting, I had a set of blue dumbells (I probably still have them in storage) which weigh 5 lbs. I could hardly do side raises with them. A few reps made my shoulders scream in agony. It took a while, but I graduated to the uncoated iron dumbells.

I have to agree with the earlier posters, I love your attitude AHD.
I think you have the humility it takes to stick to your goals and achieve them, one at a time.
Best of luck, and keep us updated on your progress.

Sounds like your doing good. Just remember the one factor most people dont add into the "get fit" equation is time. Keep at it.

shoulders
Shoulders get hit in other workouts, especially chest - I don't really know why so many people pair these two parts. The trick for me was doing shoulders separately, and within a month my weight went way up.

I agree with most of the other posts AHD,
You seem to have the right attitude and the determination to reach your goals, you just need to keep at it and give it time.
Good luck!

The only other comment I would make that others haven't is as a dad you are setting a good example for your kids. In our society of obese kids the lesson needs to start at home through parents leading by example.
Keep it up!

Consistency + Discipline = Success
Hey AtHomeDad!
Never feel defeated. You're doing something that the majority of people aren't doing, and that's exercising. It's good that you're developing good habits and in time, you'll look back on all this and say "Wow... that wasn't so bad."
You're at the beginning of a life changing journey. I've been on my journey for 20 years now, and I'm anxious to see what the next 20 years will bring.
Always remember what a friend of mine often told me when I was transforming my physique. "Be like a postage stamp on and envelope and 'stick to it until you get there'."
Rome wasn't built in a day, but neither was the City Dump. Be disciplined and stay consistent, and you'll reach your goals.
- Skip "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything."

Why is your trainer pairing shoulders and chest together? Your shoulders were obviously fatigued after doing chest, perhaps you should make a change in your routine with the aid of your trainer.

I asked him about the chest/shoulders being together and he told me to just wait and see. I'll follow his advice and see where it gets me.

Athomedad....
I don't post very often, but I read on this forum regularly.
I'm 55, have two sons aged 10 and 5.
I was 267 at 5'9" on January 1st.....been overweight for the better part of the past 20 years. (I was athletic in high school, but that body is long gone!)
I'm now 214lb....and now all my co-workers are rooting for me! (really!)
The best advice you're going to get from all the folks on this forum is to not lose your mental attitude toward exercising. I've noticed that, even on days where I really don't feel like exercising, I get my "attitude" back after only about 15min of it.....end up completing my routine without any mental restraints.
Don't let your mind overrule what your body is capable of.
By the way, I don't diet, or in any way deprive myself of food.....just eat better foods....and all I want!
good luck
hogship

Thanks for all the support people. This is the first time that I have lifted and eaten right at the same time. It's gonna take some getting used to but I am not gonna give up.
