---- Shipwreck yields historic riches -- $500M worth ----

Cliffs:
? 17 tons of colonial-era coins worth $500 million, Odyssey Marine Exploration says
? Salvage project "Black Swan" in Atlantic Ocean cloaked in secrecy
? Court records show coins might be from a 400-year-old ship found off England
? "Unprecedented" find from colonial era, rare coin expert says

TAMPA, Florida (AP) -- Deep-sea explorers said Friday they have mined what could be the richest shipwreck treasure in history, bringing home 17 tons of colonial-era silver and gold coins from an undisclosed site in the Atlantic Ocean.

Estimated value: $500 million.

A jet chartered by Tampa-based Odyssey Marine Exploration landed in the United States recently with hundreds of plastic containers brimming with coins raised from the ocean floor, Odyssey co-chairman Greg Stemm said. The more than 500,000 pieces are expected to fetch an average of $1,000 each from collectors and investors. (Watch the booty get unloaded at a secret location )

"For this colonial era, I think (the find) is unprecedented," said rare coin expert Nick Bruyer, who examined a batch of coins from the wreck. "I don't know of anything equal or comparable to it."

Citing security concerns, the company declined to release any details about the ship or the wreck site Friday. Stemm said a formal announcement will come later, but court records indicate the coins might come from a 400-year-old ship found off England.

Because the shipwreck was found in a lane where many colonial-era vessels went down, there is still some uncertainty about its nationality, size and age, Stemm said, although evidence points to a specific known shipwreck. The site is beyond the territorial waters or legal jurisdiction of any country, he said.

"Rather than a shout of glee, it's more being able to exhale for the first time in a long time," Stemm said of the haul, by far the biggest in Odyssey's 13-year history.

He wouldn't say if the loot was taken from the same wreck site near the English Channel that Odyssey recently petitioned a federal court for permission to salvage.

In seeking exclusive rights to that site, an Odyssey attorney told a federal judge last fall that the company likely had found the remains of a 17th-century merchant vessel that sank with valuable cargo aboard, about 40 miles off the southwestern tip of England. A judge signed an order granting those rights last month.

Secret project
In keeping with the secretive nature of the project dubbed "Black Swan," Odyssey also isn't talking yet about the types, denominations and country of origin of the coins.

Bruyer said he observed a wide range of varieties and dates of likely uncirculated currency in much better condition than artifacts yielded by most shipwrecks of a similar age.

The Black Swan coins -- mostly silver pieces -- likely will fetch several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars each, with some possibly commanding much more, he said. Value is determined by rarity, condition and the story behind them.

Controlled release of the coins into the market along with their expected high value to collectors likely will keep prices at a premium, he said.

The richest ever shipwreck haul was yielded by the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which sank in a hurricane off the Florida Keys in 1622. Treasure-hunting pioneer Mel Fisher found it in 1985, retrieving a reported $400 million in coins and other loot.

Odyssey likely will return to the same spot for more coins and artifacts.

"We have treated this site with kid gloves and the archaeological work done by our team out there is unsurpassed," Odyssey CEO John Morris said. "We are thoroughly documenting and recording the site, which we believe will have immense historical significance."

Publicly traded company
The news is timely for Odyssey, the only publicly traded company of its kind.

The company salvaged more than 50,000 coins and other artifacts from the wreck of the SS Republic off Savannah, Georgia, in 2003, making millions. But Odyssey posted losses in 2005 and 2006 while using its expensive, state-of-the-art ships and deep-water robotic equipment to hunt for the next mother lode.

"The outside world now understands that what we do is a real business and is repeatable and not just a lucky one shot deal," Stemm said. "I don't know of anybody else who has hit more than one economically significant shipwreck."

In January, Odyssey won permission from the Spanish government to resume a suspended search for the wreck of the HMS Sussex, which was leading a British fleet into the Mediterranean Sea for a war against France in 1694 when it sank in a storm off Gibraltar.

Historians believe the 157-foot warship was carrying nine tons of gold coins to buy the loyalty of the Duke of Savoy, a potential ally in southeastern France. Odyssey believes those coins could also fetch more than $500 million.

But under the terms of a historic agreement Odyssey will have to share any finds with the British government. The company will get 80 percent of the first $45 million and about 50 percent of the proceeds thereafter.

Quake brings WWII PT boat up from ocean floor
POSTED: 1355 GMT (2155 HKT), April 27, 2007
Story Highlights• World War II torpedo boat now sitting 10 feet out of water
• Live ammo still aboard 60-year-old vessel
• 8.1 quake in Solomons left 52 people dead
Adjust font size:
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- Wreckage from a World War II torpedo boat was tossed up from the sea in the Solomon Islands after a powerful 8.1 earthquake hit the area in early April, an official said Friday.

Jay Waura of the National Disaster Management Office said the explosive-laden boat was exposed when reefs were pushed up three meters (10 feet) above sea level by the April 2 quake, which caused a devastating tsunami in the western Solomon Islands that killed 52 people.

The Solomons' coastline is still littered with decaying military wrecks from World War II, including the torpedo patrol boat commanded by U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

"My team members believe that this boat could have been one of those U.S. torpedo boats such as the famous PT-109, which the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy had served aboard during the war," Waura said.

Kennedy's boat was sunk by a Japanese destroyer in the Blackett Strait in August 1943 off Gizo, the main town of western Solomon Islands. The Solomons' main island, Guadalcanal, was the scene of fierce World War II fighting.

Waura said people on Rannonga island showed his team the wreckage sitting on dry ground.

"We were amazed by this finding, as previously this wreckage had long been sitting under the sea and rusting in peace without anyone knowing about it," New Zealand Press Association quoted Waura as saying.

Only the boat's hull with its deadly cargo of explosives remained intact, he said.

Waura said a Solomon Islands Police Force bomb disposal unit would be sent to the island to safely detonate the explosives.

Kennedy was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy serving in the Pacific when his PT-109 was cut in two by the Japanese destroyer. Two crew were killed, but Kennedy and the vessel's other survivors clung to the wreckage before swimming to a nearby island. The experience earned Kennedy the Navy and Marine Corps Medal.

Wreckage from PT-109 was found in 2002 by shipwreck hunter Robert Ballard, who also found the Titanic as well as other notable sunken ships.

Is shipwreck the key to Napoleon's holy war?
POSTED: 1619 GMT (0019 HKT), March 1, 2007
Adjust font size:
LONDON, England (CNN) -- A mysterious shipwreck, marked on a 200-year-old map and discovered outside the Mediterranean port of Acre, Israel, may throw light on Napoleon's attempt to conquer the Holy Land.

Marine archaeologists from the University of Haifa are excavating the wreck, which sunk during a battle between Napoleon and the British Royal Navy, who were helping the inhabitants of Acre defend their city against the French.

Researchers found the map, drawn by a British soldier in 1799, in a British archive.

It showed the formation of the British fleet off the coast of Acre as they faced a blockade of Napoleon's ships. The map also showed a sunken ship at exactly the spot where the wreck was found.

The ship, which is 30 meters long and 9 meters wide, was first discovered in 1966, but systematic excavations have only just begun. Scientists are hoping to discover whether the ship was involved in battles in 1799 or 1840 and whether it was a French or British vessel.

So far, the team unearthing the sunken ship have excavated cannon balls, canisters of gunpowder, wineskins and metal buckles from the ship, which has led them to believe that it was part of a naval fleet. The nationality of the ship is not yet known, nor whether the boat was sunk on purpose, and if so, by whom.

However, a cannon ball found wedged into the keel of the boat has led researchers to believe that this is what sank the ship.

"One of the theories is that this is a 'barricade ship' -- a ship that the British purposely sunk at the entrance of the port in order to block smaller French ships from entering," said Ya'acov Kahanov from the University of Haifa. "The finds need to be analyzed to verify how the ship ended up at the bottom of the sea.

"Once we understand these questions, we will be able to understand more about battle tactics of that period," he added.

The team unearthing the sunken ship believes that it offers a unique opportunity to discover more about Napoleon's campaign in the Holy Land.

"This is the only shipwreck excavated from the French blockade of Acre, and it can teach us a lot about the naval battles of that period," Kahanov said.
