    Pro's and Cardio

Do any pro's indulge in cardio styles such as HIIT while cutting to contest shape? I've usually seen only walking/elliptical/stepper kinda cardio. Haven't seen much of jogging/running either.

Is there any specific reason for this?

I know of not a single non-tested bodybuilder who does fast cardio...

Well doing slow cardio actually uses mostly fat, while getting into higher cardio ranges you use more carbs for energy, so they are just trying to be smart about it and stay anabolic.

Also, saw Phil jogging in the hills in the preview of the new bodybuilding documentary. Doubt he does it with any regularity though, as he has mentioned knee problems even just starting bodybuilding. And the reason more pros don't jog is exactly like the above poster said. It is tough on the joints which in their case already take a beating and also they weight up to 300 in the offseason, so it would be like an obese guy running every day. It would grind your knees down.

I really doubt they are worrying about staying anabolic lol.

What I have heard more than a handful of times is that COMPETITORS who do HIIT or running cardio usually lose considerable size in their quads. Whatever the reason behind that, I don't know, but you can be sure that competitors over the years have seen it happen so they avoid it.

The fact that you just never hear about it should say a lot... because bodybuilding is pretty simple (not saying it's "easy", just straightforward).

I can't imagine guys that get up to 300lbs in the offseason start sprinting when they wanna cut down.

Ben Pakulski did a lot of HIIT this year in prep for the Olympia.

    This is from his website

At this point I was doing HIIT Cardio in the evening, 20-30 mins, and 40-50mins of cardio in the morning (either after meal one, or after weight training depending on the bodypart).

This is basically what has held true for a long time.

LISS or nothing (from what I've seen).

They all work TBH...but why do pros do LISS? As Timmermann said, it's hard to go full out on cardio when you're running on fumes. Ditto that for any competitor really. Anyone doubts this then do a contest then tell us how motivated you were to do HITT 4 weeks out from show time...

I walk for almost 7 hours daily and yet it hardly feels like it's improving anything - is it honestly?
Completely serious question, only cardio i've ever done has been tabata sprints, that's where you feel it.

Without getting into "prohibited talk" it has to do with various fat burning supplements combined with various muscle building/preserving supplements and diet.

LISS only works because of the other three. Take any of those other three out of the equation...doesn't work.

NFL players do it all the time. We all know Linebackers and Fullbacks are both big/heavy and fast. It's all about conditioning.

Oh for sure. I also suspect that a lot of bb'rs probably have very low 40 times. In the long haul...no good. LOL

    For bodybuilding of course...

If someone wanted to lose 20lbs... they could diet and HIIT to their hearts content. Would work just fine.

So just how good is their cardiovascular conditioning while only doing LISS? Compared to lets say the average jogger.

The condition, i know their main goal is the fat loss but you do need to not run out of breath every now and again too.

I heard something about 20 rep squat sets as a substitute for cardio, was a long time ago and not sure if it's a worthwhile idea or idiotic.
