Strength Training; Does it stunt your growth at a young age?

My 13 year old brother has been an amazing baseball player from a young age. I've always been on the other side, playing football. Well, hes a good player, but he lacks quite a bit of strength. I know he's 4 years younger than me, but I know the kids his age, and he's not the strongest kid ever. Well, I've been trying to get him to come do some workouts with me so he can get some extra strength with that skill. I know he's not gonna be throwin up 225 on bench or anything like that. But my parents are worried that strength training is going to stunt his growth, or hurt his game. I do know the difference between just brute strength and functional strength which he needs.

Is the weightlifting at the younger age gonna hurt, or help him?

No, it will not stunt growth. Just make sure younger kids are taught proper form and coached on how to lift safely. Kids tend to pay less attention to safety than adults do.

If he use proper form, no. If he injures himself, pray that the growth plates didn't get damaged.

even with injuries i doubt it will affect growth plates. most common sporting injuries are knees, ankles & back from running & suddenly changing direction. these loads involving sudden momentum changes can be much greater than lifting weights. havent heard of lower bodies being shorter from kids playing sports.

for loads to restrict bone growth, they have to be applied continuously for many hours per day & are agonizing eg feet binding in chinese girls.

It never hurts to get young people into body-weight, and coaches and teachers have been putting little kids through that for years.

8th grade is actually when my P.E. teacher gave us lessons in weights.
