Hey guys,
Myself and a friend are planning to do a 10 day protein shake only diet. We'll both be hitting the gym 5 days a week doing weights and cardio.
Is this a good idea to lose the excess BF? Am i going to lose muscle mass?
Opinions?
Thanks in advance.

your body (your brain mostly) needs energy to live and if you are not taking carbs nor fats in it will make energy to fuel itself (glucose) from your shakes via gluconeogenesis thus a huge ****ing part of your shakes will go to waste
and since you sure wont be taking enough calories from shakes alone (if you want to lose weight (fat) you have to be in a caloric deficit), your body will also make energy via gluconeogenesis from the aminos stored in your body - your muscles
and since you will be working out 5 times a week it is a really stupid idea to live on protein shakes alone
i am not sure how much damage can be done in a week tho, but i am pretty sure muscle to fat lost ratio will be in favor to muscles

Good idea? That's a judgement call...if it sounds like fun to you not to have solid food for ten days, go for it. Hopefully you add enough fat & vitamins/minerals, though. Sounds like the $400 velocity diet that T-Nation uses to push their products:

Provided your calories are below maintenance & protein is high, you'll lose BF whether its a liquid diet or solid diet. The Velocity diet allows for one solid meal per week, though.

This is stupid. If you want to do a crazy lose-weight-fast diet plan, eat nothing but chicken and broccoli and greens for a week. You'll get just as much protein, still be on a caloric defecit and be a lot better off.
You'd undoubtedly lose muscle mass, and your lifts would probably suck by the end of the week.negged for hating on pop tarts

That's not a fast.
You'll be getting minimum micronutrients, and no fiber.
You're going to be constantly hungry.
You're not going to have any energy in the gym.
You won't be able to lift as much. This, coupled with what will probably be a severe and sudden drops in calories, will probably cause you to lose muscle in addition to fat.
Sounds like a great idea.PRs - Sq / B / D / Total

there is just no way. If you train like I do you won't be able to do it lol. Your body is going to go into fat storage mode. you're going to end up binge eating which will be stored. when you come back from your "fast" you're body is going to store your food as fat since it's in storage mode..... Just eat clean, light, high protein / low carbs, and do a caloric deficit for a few days.

Why the hell do so many people think eating only x for y days is a healthy way to 'clean' your system? You're just missing out on a lot of nutrition your body needs. This is basically the protein equivalent of the 30 bananas a day for 2 weeks diet.

All that's going to do is deprive you of essential nutrients. ALthough it might "work", given that your calories would be low enough to promote weight loss, you woudln't fare very well. You'd probably be fatigued and weak. You need some fat in your diet, and if you really want to do things right, some carbs, too. What about protein shakes, fruit and nuts instead..? Of if you really want to do all liquids, protein shakes, whole milk, and fruit juices..?

I am in no way saying that shakes only is a good idea, because I dont think it is, but this is my buddy John http://gallery.musclecontest.com/ind...&entry_id=1381 who does basically shakes only all year round (he eats maybe 2 whole food meals a week max) so goes to show you it works for some people.
