How many calories do you burn doing cardio?

I was in the gym yesterday and bumped into one of my buddies on the treadmill. I ran alongside him (he had already been running for 15 minutes) and i notcied that after our run was over (30 min for me, 45 min for him) he had already burned 600 calories and i had only burned 200! Well at least that's what it said on the machine. So, out of curiosity, how many calories do you guys usually burn when doing cardio? Should i be aiming for a higher number? I run 5 days a week and always try to hit at least 200 burned.

The treadmill I use at my gym seems accurate with calculators online. In 30 minutes, I burn between 475 and 515 calories. I run right around 4 miles. Most of the time I'm at 8mph with 4 to 5 minutes at 10 mph and then a few minutes at 7.

Other treadmills seem to be way off so calculate it online and see for yourself.
I Rep back always. Put it in comment.

500+ will 100% get repped back.

Not very fast at all to be honest. I'm only going on like level 4 and hitting 2 miles by the end of the run. But this is because I haven't ran in so long so I'm trying to get my endurance back up. I know my speed and distance will get better over time.

the ballpark is about 100 calories per mile. So I figure you ran about 2 miles in 30 minutes.

100 calories per mile is a good ballpark..... I used to run a 5 mile course in 40 minutes several times per week. It is good cardio vascular exercise, but.....

it REALLY makes you think about how much easier it is to just NOT EAT the 500 calories!

    I run for 20mins.
During that 20mins I run two miles and then walk until the 20mins is up.
I usually burn about 260 calories and go about 2.20 miles.

With a heartrate monitor calibrated to my weight and messing with incline have been able to get over 1000 Calories off of 5 miles. I believe the machine said 800-900.

    Thanks for setting me straight.

303 now but close enough. I'm new to working out/exercise in general and whilst I didn't think the computer on the bike would be accurate for me, I haven't been trusting the websites I've seen that allow you to input your weight, what activity you've been doing and for how long either for some reason. So I just went with what it said on the bike, thinking it could/would be understimating calories burned which was better than those websites which I feared might be overestimating. Not sure why I thought they'd be overestimating but I did. Heart rate monitors ultimately seem to be the way to go.

Whilst I couldn't input my activity precisely on one of the type of websites mentioned above as their parameters are slightly vague, I've just gone and dropped multiple activities in for 60 minutes as if I was 180 lbs (my tentative ultimate goal). Hunting, cricket, painting house, moderate skating, baseball, skateboarding, kayaking and moderate pushups all came out at 414 calories which is about what my bike is telling me when I'm done. I then jacked the weight input up to my correct one and the calories jumped up to 690. Would 690 sound more like it to you for my time on the bike?

For me 25-35 minutes of cardio is anywhere from 400-450 calories burnt. Changing the resistance of course!

I agree, once I purchased a HR Monitor I realized how "off" the cal counters built into the machines were. I would suggest a strap on monitor, I have a Polar FT7.

The one at my gym seems pretty accurate. Doing 2 min intervals 4.2mph and 8mph. I run 2.33 miles in 20 min. And burn 268 calories. That sounds pretty accurate
You start with an intention, but you must constantly remind yourself to keep applying enough focus to achieve that outcome. Follow through. When you've given enough attention to the matter, you"ll have the result...

Good plan, build back up slowly. And 200 cals is still much better than nothing right! In answer to the thread question, i did an hour at 12km/h with a 1% incline on the treadmill yesterday and it said 850 cals burned but i cant imagine thats entirely accurate..

The more you weigh the more calories burned. Is your friend heavy set?

If you are going by what is says on the machine to tell you have many calories you have burned, you may aswell just think up a number in your head it will be just as useful..

The machine will give you the average on a particular study of people, but everyone loses calories at a different rate, You can put your weight height, sex, shoe size, number of times fapped per week and all the other stuff but you still arn't going to get an acurate reading..

Example, a 6ft 200lbs out of shape fat guy will be burning X amount of calories and the 6ft 200lbs shredded guy next to him will be burning X amount +Y as he has a bigger amount of lean muscle..

So, don't worry about how many calories the guy on the next treadmill is losing, think about your own, get a routine, stick to it and get your diet sorted out, Concentrate on how many lbs you're losing per week or month, not how many cals you're losing per session.

I only use crosstrainer and bikes.

1 hour cross trainer on hill setting = 900 Calories

1 hour on bike on high hill setting = 500 Calories

The hill setting also works your legs out as well.
