Just got back from the Clinic I volunteer at. I was there starting at 8am and left at 12:30pm. Not a single calorie was consumed. While people had some bagels + cream cheese right next to me.

Is there a way to tell if you're losing muscle through IF + 500 calorie deficit? Your body doesn't go into catabolism within 16 hours does it?
So if I'm doing the regular 16/8 Intermittent Fasting schedule and having about 1.5g protein/LBM everyday, along with BCAA's during workout then the chances of me losing any muscle mass is very low or almost zero? I should be losing pure fat right!?

dunno if ive got dem shredded abs yet, but honestly I rarely did ab exercises. Figured I was hitting them enough doing other exercises. Lately though, now that i've gotten a little leaner, ive enjoyed a few heavy weighted ab exercises. I like decline crunches holding a plate, or use the rope on the cable machine to do kneeling crunches. But still, I don't spend all day doing abs.

guys i have a big problem
i bulked up all the way from 120lbs to 181lbs, then cut to 162lbs and lost 3 inches of my waist and barely looked any different, i know some of it was water weight but I just felt like a skinny ******* and bulked up for the past week, now I'm sitting at 168lbs and around 15% bf(same as when I was 120lbs last year in january) and I am doing fine with eating but I have a hard time with my thoughts, I feel like I am getting skinny and am too small.
One of the main reasons I want to cut is terrible gyno(legit gyno since 12 + chest fat and ****) and some acne which I hope would get better as I cut (anyone improved it when cut?).
I can't get past thinking how small I'm getting, and even though I was getting stronger on my cut I felt like getting smaller every day.

400 grams of mixed veggies (100cals) + 30g cheese (100cals) and some ketchup is an awesome, tasty, nutritious low calorie filling plate of food. Just sayin'.

No. But there is a positive correlation between artificial sweeteners and weight gain. Here's a published peer reviewed study:

Veggies and ketchup? (no fries)
I could do veggies with cheese, or cheese with ketchup (burgers...not sure how people do it with grilled cheese/mac and cheese), but the idea of them all three together seems off. Glad you found something you enjoy though. Definitely can understand how that would be filling lulz*Workout Journal: We form like Voltron: BoB/Exane/NWSkier/Gin/Hamzzza/Applecat*

To add... when insulin is present, since it is anabolic (aka brings things together) lipolysis. glycolysis, gluconeogenesis and any other "bond-breaking" reactions (with regard to food metabolism, at least) are impossible, according to current research... at least with what I have been taught and learned up until now. [gluconeogenesis is a synthesis of glucose from amino acids, but I was just using it as an example of what is not possible when insulin is present...)
This is why diets like the ketogenic diet can be so effective.Team Manlet

For you IF brahs: are you calorie/macro cycling between your rest and workout days or simply keeping a 500 kcal deficit everyday?

That's the problem with correlation, brethren.
People that use a lot of artificial sweeteners > drink/eat lot of crap > lead crappy lifestyle > are generally heavier.
There you go.
Not sure if serious.. !?

True, correleation =/= causation, but keep in mind majority of these studies are done on your average person, who is not health conscious. It would be a whole different ball game if you took a group of athletes who lifted weights on a regular basis, dieted them down using garbage foods and IIFYM with zero regard to health and a separate group who was dieted on only clean, whole foods.
Unfortunately that's all we've got, as far as I know.Team Manlet

excerpt:
"When matched for initial body mass index (BMI), gender, ethnicity, and diet, drinkers of artificially sweetened beverages consistently had higher BMIs at the follow-up, with dose dependence on the amount of consumption."
this means that people who drink diet soda have higher BMIs than non-diet-soda-drinkers.
but there are several possibilites to explain this.
-there is no actual correlation between weight GAIN and diet soda, just BMI (WEIGHT) and diet soda
by the way, BMI doesnt mean sh*t. according to BMI most jacked people here are considered overweight or obese (my BMI is 26, according to that im overweight)
additionally most people drinking diet soda are probably somehow involved in physical activities or fitness, because drinking diet soda indicates that you care about your physical appearance. or theyre simply fat people trying to lose weight, which could also be an explanation, because those people are mostly the "one maxi menu with diet coke"-fatties who are obese and drink diet soda to make up for their junk food "diets" (these guys: "Conversely, knowingly ingesting aspartame was associated with increased overall energy intake, suggesting overcompensation for the expected caloric reduction [30]")
cliffs:
there is no link between FAT gain and artificial sweeteners, just BMI and - at best - weight gain (2 to 7% more diet soda drinkers gained weight compared to non diet soda drinkers, this doesnt mean sh*t - additionally the difference was less than 2 pounds)
diet soda does NOT hinder weight loss:
"A double blind study subjected 55 overweight youth to 13 weeks of a 1,000 Kcal diet accompanied by daily capsules of aspartame or lactose placebo. Both groups lost weight, and the difference was not significant. Weight loss was attributed to caloric restriction [27]"skinny as fuk
