I need some help and quick. I consider myself to be in great shape. I pass the army physical fitness test with flyin colors (271 points out of a possible 300)... The only problem is that according to the army that doesn't mean jack if you cant pass the BF tape test. I've tried just about everything but I can't get my waist line under 39"... I need to get to 38" in a matter of about a week to pass this test. Any suggestions?
Anything will help PLEASE!!

Diuretics, steam bath, the Lemonade diet, and the gum that makes you spit a lot. You aint losing 1% of body fat in 7 days but you can shrink up in seven days crazy quick. Fill up on electrolytes though so you don't go into shock.

I feel your pain. I was in the army but i got out about a year ago. I had like a 275 on PT test. Because i am a weightlifter my weight is really high. 225 for a 6 foot person. Best suggestion I have for you (personal experience but people might say otherwise). Try to cut out carbs for a week or so before a tape test. It sucks but it drops weight quick. If you can suck it up for a week that would drop you down what you need. Also start to drink a ton of water. The more water you drink the less water your body holds.

Another suggestion:
Suck in that stomach and try and crunch your neck down to make it bigger than it really is. That way when they measure your neck it will seem bigger and your stomach will seem a little bit smaller. Every little bit helps when doing those stupid tape tests.

The tape is so damn stupid
This is why I hated taping, there is no latitude for common sense.
We had a guy named "Stump". 5'9, 230 and calipured around 11% fat. He was awesome. He was the only guy I knew who could throw an F-14 TRANSMITTER (~230 pounds) on his shoulder and walk down the flight deck.
The Navy called him fat.
We were beyond disbelief.
No common sense check FtL.

Exactly! When in the army it was almost like they want little string beans around all the time. All the weightlifters were classified as "fat" even though they were in 10X the shape that other people were. They do not take body fat percentage into the mix. Its just height and weight. At 6 foot I was supposed to weigh like 185 pounds or something like that. Just think about how many people on these boards would be considered fat by military standards. haha. It blows my mind.

1% is doable in a week. If you also loose some water weight that would be even better

everything here is on point. Prep H and wrap works great. Cutting carbs will work too. Sweat a ton, drink water, watch what you're eating. NO carbs. you should be good to go.
As for the military and being fat, I know none of the lifters on here are considered fat just because they are over the weight. That's why there are two different ways to meet the requirements for the PRT."The deadlift is more functional in that its very hard to imagine a more useful application of strength than picking heavy **** up off the ground." - Mark Rippetoe

Too easy - I'm a big guy myself and I've never had to weigh in without being taped and although I've never had to do this, I've seen some crazy stuff waiting in the tape line and this one seems to work really well.
Instead of shrinking your belly just make your neck bigger. A fraction of an inch gain on your neck will reduce your BF much quicker than an inch loss of your belly will.
What you do is lean your neck back like you're looking up at the ceiling. Then as you lower your chin back to the looking forward position just make your chin come straight down so it feels like you're bloating out your neck (which you actually are). Think of Chris Farley, that's what you should look like. You'll gain a lot of circumference around the neck by bloating. Also I heard that if you push your tongue to the top of your mouth really hard it makes your neck bulge a bit too.
Cheers.
Here's a pic of what I'm talking about if the above description didn't help (minus the **** eating grin):

alright appreciate the help. Ill see how far they'll let me slide by bloating my neck... Ive also got some diuretics such as hydrazide... I've never tried the preparation h trick ill try that out the night before too... Ill post my results and let ya know how it went
Another question: Ive heard straining your neck the night before will give a swollen/injured neck to get that extra half inch. sounds extremely dangerous. Any suggestions on the "safest" way to go about doing that? (note the quotations. I know theres no safe way of doing it)
p.s. the military BF tape test is some BS...Last edited by Dmshu22; 12-11-2008 at 10:55 AM.

Hey I understand they're trying to weed out the overweight and out of shape people. Don't get me wrong I'm all about being hoah... I'm heading to Iraq in about 1 month... We have some soldiers that are extremely out of shape and just can't get where they need to be because they just don't care. I don't want to go into combat with them. But they need to adjust their testing a little bit. I have the 2nd highest PT score in my platoon... I work out twice a day intensily. I am not out of shape. I have more motivation then probly anyone in the platoon. I shouldn't be flagged because a tape measure says I don't meet the appearance standards. That's all....

Thanks to everyone that REPd me and gave me tips... I passed my tape test by 4%... I'm at 18% right now. the methods I tried and worked for me.
1- Clean eating... egg whites, tuna, 6oz sliced turkey, 6oz chicken breast, celery and cucumbers only
2- Cardio am... Cardio pm plus weight training
3- Hydroxycut Hardcore
4- Hydrazyde
5- Suana (with preparation H and saran wrap on waist)
I've lost 5% bodyfat and almost 20 lbs with this plan in about a month.
(Hydrazyde and preparation H I started about a week ago)Weight loss is a lifestyle change... not a dietary phase...

Good to hear you passed man. Those tape tests suck. I never have to get taped but the AF still called me overweight (when I weighed only 6 lbs more) because I don't have a 32.5 in waist, hence my BMI says I'm fat. I think even kingsmate20 would agree that I am well within fitness standards of any branch.

the army tape test doesn't take into account that people have different builds. A measurement of your neck and waist, then compared to your height and age? If I were 1/4 inch taller it drops my body fat percentage by 1%. I just think they should update their test a little bit (someone with broader shoulders and hips will probably have a thicker waist, but can still have a small neck if they don't have much body fat).

the army neck waist ratio doesnt measure body fat, thats why it is bs. i would have no problem doing a body fat test such as with calipers or under water weighing, those are a lot more accurate than some stupid ratio. you can look at most gym rats and tell they are not over 22% body fat, they just have a big midsection, regardless if u can pass ur test with flying colors your size shouldnt matter

Another few tips man is when your sweating all your water weight out don't drink regular tap water...drink distiller water...it's enough to keep you hydrated but it runs right through you...also...there's colon cleansers that can help...a home made one is epsome salt mixed with water...one teaspoon to a 8 oz glass of water and I'd suggest you squeeze some lemon juice into that cause it's about the most god awful thing I've ever tasted...just some tips I picked up from combatives.

Can someone explain how to do the Prep H method. Is it just apply and wrap? What does it accomplish? Great thanks.

I have a pt test tomorrow and I'll most likely fail the tape test. Might get me reduced from SSG to Sgt. I've never failed before but in the last 18 months I've sustained pretty severe injuries plus a lot of stress = lots of eating and no PT. Too bad I didn't see this thread 4 weeks ago!
