Ya I am going to do squats too but I was just wondering if the sprints will help any bit as I have to do them to get fit for gaelic football anyway.

    Welcome to the board Bulkmeupplease,
    Fellow Gaelic Footballer here,
Definetely squat as the two posters above said,
also try plyometrics aswell, ive noticed a distinct increase in both my jump and speed/acceleration since starting plyo.
Say you have a game, Sat/Sunday, do your squatting on a Monday/Tuesday as for a while it will really fatigue your legs for a day or two.

It depends on how well your body recovers,
i can barely walk the day after squats or a sprints session.

Typical GAA training schedule pretty much everywhere would be

    Monday
    Tuesday Training
    Wednesday
    Thursday
    Friday Training
    Sat (Rest)
    Sund Game

Possibly Squats/Gym work on a Monday and Sprints on a wednesday???

Yes they will. Look at the olympic sprinters, their leg size didn't come from just squats. Running hill sprints is great for increasing your leg strength and size.

from what I've seen, sprinters work out so that they have a good foundation to train hard for sprinting.

Speaking from personal experience with trying to get my long jump farther, doing squats AND practicing the sport itself is gonna be the best thing to do.
    Another skinny bastard

Thanks for the replys lads ive heard before that sprinting targets the fast twich fibers in the upper leg and forces the muscle. but I will squat regardless and continue my own sprint drills . last nights squats went well. I started with a low weight but was happy with my form. Im going to do chest today. Football doesnt start for three weeks so I hope to be reasonably fit.

Sprints are good, but the fact is if you want to build your leg size up you would have to sprint a LONG time before you got the results from squats in 6 months. And you might as well do both since sprints work your abs, obliques, and back pretty good too.

Spinning/cycling and inline skating will increase your leg size faster that running. Take a look a speed skaters and cyclists, there legs are much larger than olympic sprinters.

Try some uphill sprints. It won't really add size but will help your overall strength and speed.

I'm sure this is somewhere on the forums ... but here it is again .... running is not a substitute for lowerbody weight training. It will assist in stamina/endurance helping for lifting but it does not cause growth or significant leg strength/power.

Trust a bodybuilders forum to say that squats is the only way to add size to your legs.

Sprints will add size. Especially uphill sprints, changing directions. Downhill sprints sound like a good way to get injured.

Sprints obviously train your legs a little. But, to get actual size you need to lift. How many sprinters don't train legs in the gym to get those quads?
If they don't lift and they just sprint daily this is the size you will get.

He's also very cut.. which can make someone look bigger.. I'm not saying that sprinting doesn't spark new muscle growth because it can and does but at least the guy in the picture has very low body fat.. his legs don't look massive to me.. but they do look strong.

I was being kind of sarcastic. He has ran his entire life to get that. How long would it take a sub 8% bodybuilder to get those doing squats?
New to BB, need some green to spread.

If they don't lift and they just sprint daily this is the size you will get.

Fastest runner in the world and look at his massive quads.
Is that Bolt? Because Bolt was on I believe David Letterman and said he does weight training 6 days per week.

Hill sprints and stair running will work your calves, and pretty well, too.

Quads and hamstrings, not so much. Sprinters strive to gain leg power without gaining too much weight most of the time - a lot of it's about relative power output in proportion to their own weight. A 400 lb. man squatting 500 and a 200 lb. man squatting 500, one's naturally going to move faster.

Experienced sprinter here, and I can tell you that sprinting will indeed increase your leg size. Not as much as squatting will, but there is no doubt that sprinting will help.
    I ride bikes.

    Yes that is Bolt.

I think you'll find that Bolt said he trains 6 times a week, not all weight training.
