huh? Swimming isn't bad and is cardio, but it's not as effective as running. But it doesn't hurt

If you have a 45 lb. plate strapped to your back, then yeah swimming would be bad.

    Otherwise, no.

cardio is cardio. it doesn't matter what you do. as long as you jack off...errr...up your heart rate (& do intervals if you're looking to increase your calorie expenditure & fitness level), that's all that matters.

swimming is great for pple w/ a significant amount of fat to lose, 'cause it's easy on the joints. even better than the elliptical machine, or as a lot of pple like to call it: the eppileptical machine. ahaha.

personally, i lost a lot of fat from may '07 --> july '07 when i stopped doing high intensity intervals on the treadmill for 60 mins & started taking aquafit classes. & that says a lot, 'cause h.i.i.t. on the treadmill is the hardest ****, EVER; definately a lot harder than water aerobics, even though the classes i took were interval-based as well; but still...i like to think that says something: that group fitness classes in the pool are top-knotch. in may of '07, i went down the most dress sizes. after 2 weeks of attending the classes regularly (5x/week), i had to buy a new bathing suit. & that's even w/out changing my eating. so, the energy imbalance obviously came from a greater energy deficit through exercise. yep. it seems like the change of activity shocked my body into dropping all of that fat, even if it wasn't as intense/hard.

the last time i did a water aerobics class, in sept of '08, i was shocked @ how immensely easy it was. it wasn't even a decent workout the slightest bit. & i remember how hard the class used to be. it made me feel damn good about my fitness level increasing.

I swam competitivly for 10 years straight in my life. It was the best decision I have made concerning bodybuilding.

    PRO's:

    1. It cut all body fat (I was at 5.3% at 17 years old)

    2. Lean, strong muscle.

    3. Phenomenal back and shoulders (Dwight Howard??)

    4. Great fast-twitch muscle development

    5. Strong, natural legs.

    CON's:

    1. Weak chest

Besides having a weak chest I can't think of anything besides that which hurt me as a bodybuilder. Swimming builds a great base for anyone considering bodybuilding. Look at waterpolo players, they are what happens when you mix swimming and lifting.

BIG thumbs up for swimming, mix it with lifting = success.

    Hope that helps.

I want to add swimming to my cardio arsenal this summer but i'm the stereotypical black guy and I have to learn how to first. I'm going to buy a small pool later this week and try to get the floating thing down pat. Only thing that sucks is that even though there is a small "beach" within walking distance to me i still would have to drive 30 mins and pay 4 bucks a person (would have to take wife and kid too) at a pool cause of snakes at said local beach. (We had to high-tail it out the water yesterday cause i saw a big ass water moccasin coming our direction)

    deadlift 315 x5
    squat 365x5

    Swimming is amazing exercise..

Only down side with swimming is most people feel starved after a swimming workout.

This is false. Swimming is better cardio than running. Swimming is pretty much the best cardio you can get. It uses every single muscle in your body, requires you to keep a good pace (if not you will drown), and is much easier on your joints.

Swimming is good, though I wouldn't say it's better than running. Actually, I would argue that no matter how good you are at swimming, you will never be able to breathe as well as you can while running (even if the difference is negligible). This is important, since energy expenditure is a direct function of how much oxygen you use. Also, we're able to do more work while running since we're using bigger muscles. Swimming is almost entirely upper body if you're doing a proper freestyle stroke.

On the plus side, your body stays cool while swimming, and you're less likely to injure yourself. Less impact also means faster recovery.

Swimming is AMAZING! I upped my strength and endurance (muscular and cardiovascular) significantly when I saw 4-5 days a week for a few months this past spring.

    DO IT!

just like everyone said .. swimming can only be good for u ...

this year in February when I did cardio (HIIT 5 times a week) I also started swimming 3 times a week for about 1.5/2 hours per session... the results were amazing .. even if it was hard as HELL

This. Why do you think Michael Phelps can eat 20k calories a day and still not be fat?

Because he doesn't do it every day of his life. If he did, he would be fat.

    recovering the rhythm under water

I am now trying to lose the fat that I have taken in all this time that I have been away from sport and that is costing me to return, the sedentary and student life has taken a toll on me and is charging me now.
I think swimming is a good thing and right now in Guadalajara (Spain) I'm taking advantage of the pools that have opened and little by little I'm getting the rhythm for cardio exercises.
