His nose doesn't look broken and I don't see any gash on the back of his head.

Did anyone ever think that the emergency services crews responding would of cleaned and dressed his wounds and insured the bleeding stopped. Do you know what a broken nose looks like once it stops bleeding? Not much different. They would not of brought him to the police station while he was still bleeding. Also whose to say the lacerations weren't small on the back of his head. Did you want him to allow the kid to bash his head a couple more times before defending himself?

Have you seen the closeups of the back of his head from this video?
Surprise surprise.
This is after leaving the ER where they stitched up his head, packed his nose and cleaned him up.

If you want to test your memory, try to recall what you were worrying about one year ago today.
The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.

It was four hours after he was treated by a medic. The police aren't going to take him to the station with fresh blood on him. And you don't need injuries to reasonably think your life was in danger.
There's a screenshot where it looks like there is a gash on his head and and another with what looks like a mouse under his eye. I'll post it up later if no one beats me to it.
