Anyone ever die in your gym?

So toward the end of my training this morning one of the regulars comes up and says to me, "Did you here old B**& died?" I said " what are talking about?" anyway he says this particular guy who comes in most days and I have the odd chat with, was on the seated twist machine and had a heart attack...keeled over and died there in the gym." he was mid fifties a little over weight, but c'mon. Died right there on the floor in front of the walking machines...some days your damned if you don't and damned if you do!

Many years ago I worked with a guy named Floyd. He would work double shifts all the time. He would always put his head down for a half hour nap in the lunch room between shifts. One day he never picked up his head.

I never seen it in the gym tho.

At least he died in the gym. When i die,id rather die there than most other places.

Exactly...if you're going to go at least be beneath the bar in the squat rack with 500lb on it!...he was a good guy, just one of those things I suppose.

Some really old gym, mid 70's, died at the local Golds here while doing lat pulldowns.....just keeled over and had a heart attack....

When I was younger I raced road bikes. I was in a Cat 2 race and a guy had a massive heart attack right next to me during one of the larger climbs. I thought he simply crashed. My brother who came to watch me race did CPR on him until the paramedics came. It was too serious for him to live I guess though.

Bah! I've died in the squat rack many times. It's not as glamorous as you might think.

yes, died on the treadmill. guy was in awesome shape, bad genetics though.

Sorry..wasn't trying to bring anybody down...just such a weird thing. I guess when it's your time it doesn't matter where you are (just not on the toilet please..)

When I was taking cheap whey it usually smelled like someone died.


Kinda sad irony though in all seriousness - afterall we join the damn gym to live a little longer.

A guy died on one of our ab machines about five years ago. It still gives me the creeps every time I pass by that machine...

I've never seen anything like that happen in my gym.. but once a guy had a bad seizure at the kung fu school I used to attend.. it seemed pretty bad.. like he could've died.. the paramedics kept grilling us about what happened.. I guess they thought since we're a kung fu school someone might've done something to him.. he was just doing light sparring and just flopped on the ground.. it was scary..

Ab twist machine you say, makes sense. I don't know about anyone else but I just can't breathe when I use one. My hearts pounding like a drum, so I can see how it would bring on a heart attack. Poor fella.

Holy ****!!! Never seen this, mercifully, or even heard of it happening anywhere I work out. Really sad that it happens to someone working hard to improve themself and their health. (I think this sentence is crying out for the grammar police).

Last year a 37 year old guy died on the treadmill at 24hr fitness. It was ugly to because when he collapsed his face was on the treadmill and it did not stop.

But who gives a **** which machine or weight they were using? Freakin' squat-nazis!

Anything is better than dying on the crapper though. That's gotta be the worst.

Walt Tyndall was an old school bodybuilder and powerlifter here in Indianapolis, and a great proponent of the sports. He always ran his own gym, although it moved many times. I wasn't there to see it, but he was in his late 50s or maybe 60 and keeled over while doing seated rows. Not sure if it was a heart attack or an aneurysm, but I was told he was dead before he hit the deck. At least he went doing what he loved most!

When I was younger, I asked an older guy I knew and kinda looked up to what happens after we die? He sorta shrugged and said, "Alot of people crap themselves."

Even then I knew that hanging around the older folks would give me some perspective.

I posted somewhere else, a guy at work died this week going for a coffee after a workout.
Poor sod turned 50 last week!
Pretty fit looking aswell compared with some of the fat slobs I work with.

Notts Forrest owner died in his gym this week.
Bit of a worrying trend!

I don't see a trend. Jim Fixx died many years ago. It happens.

Often from a congenital heart defect that goes unnoticed until that fateful moment when physical stress + age combine to deal a mortal blow.

A lot of older people tend to die on the crapper. That's where Elvis died.

Should I be taking things easier?

Make sure that you see a Doctor on a Regular basis. That can lead to the identification of cardiac issues before they lead to heart attacks. Cholesterol levels need to be checked. Triglyceride levels also.
