"Im in the IT field, standard 4 hours mon-fri "
I am guessing this was supposed to say 40 hours. FWIW most desktop support jobs near me barely pay over minimum, at least starting. Probably around $400/wk before taxes.
I made over $600/wk with my summer job working in a restaurant back in the day. So I would hate to make that at a "real job." Unfortunately, I make nothing these days and would almost prefer my old summer jobs.
Also I would never compare pay AFTER taxes. There are too many variables. And they are often based on choices and options offered by employer. For example one person could be maxing out a 401(k), contributions to optional insurances and savings plans, etc and living on their take home. While another could have no deductions and also save nothing, etc. No sig

hell no. ****'s expensive in australia. average suburban houses with **** all land are $400k in adelaide (smallest, cheapest mainland capital city).
3kg of whey costs me $125, a beer costs $6 ($8-9 for anything good), large big mac meal is $7.50, chicken breast is $15/kg.
$600 does not go far. unless you're living at home and dont have accommodation expenses.

I went to college, got my BA, now I work a job that has nothing to do with my degree. But the pay is better, I take home a little over $700 a week and am only 1 step above the bottom scale. I'm a lineman, they pay well due to the risk of getting fried/killed.

Well - learning every aspect of computing devices and networking goes without saying...
Go get certified to make it easier to get a job... I didn't start out as a system admin...I started my IT career as a help desk technician...
Learn to write a really good resume.
The major key is to impress in the interview...know what you're talking about and have an "I wanna tackle these problems right now on the spot" attitude.
You have to be able to adapt to change and learn almost on the spot in some cases, because a textbook cannot tell you how to do everything. You don't want something bad enough unless your prepared to give up everything for it.
