I don't think you understand military time. 0500 is an exact point in time (0500 = 5am) so you would say "meet me at 0500". If you were trying to denote an amount of time, you would specify what type of time length you're specifying (i.e., 0500 seconds, minutes, hours). Although, even then, the first zero is unnecessary. Your statement should/could have been "Meet me at the spot in 5 mikes." (5 minutes)

Yep, I've never felt that any person automatically deserves respect. It can definitely be earned. Given certain situations where I have to "respect" their position or rank, I'll do the minimum I have to to avoid punishment, but I still do not respect them. I'll just include what I need to not be punished.

I feel as though everything you just mentioned is applicable to my current career field (IT, more specifically network engineering).


I obviously have a lot of time off and downtime or I wouldn't be spending my time cruising forums.
I get paid, what I would consider, better than the average teacher.
People in tier 1-2 IT positions usually end up there for years though they quit caring and doing their job.

IT professionals seem to whine more than any other group of people I come in contact with.

Quasi question dodging ( I assume this is an issue that has this group of regulars somewhat split)

But I will say that from my perspective, for ever one very good teacher I had through high school and college I had two poor ones.

True, but even then the "drama" was mostly based on a bunch of nothing. Not to discount the effort Dom put in to smooth things over, but really was there a need for people to get their panties in a bunch in the first place? I remember more than once when all that stemmed from some trouble maker coming in, posting a bunch of stupid stuff, getting a couple of negs and then running to report it. Give me a break.

I get the need to uphold rules. I do it every day IRL. But I don't dock people's pay for tossing a piece of paper in the trash instead of the recycling bin.

I've always felt that anyone who gets upset about not being liked in a thread like this should just cut their losses and post elsewhere since there are thousands of other off-topic threads where they might fit in.

That being said, there are clear rules on this site so it's best to always keep them in mind before taking the bait and if someone is trolling or being disruptive, put them on ignore and let one of the regular mods take care of it. If you let it escalate to the point where they start reporting posts, mods who don't post here and have their hands full with the Misc. will just respond to those reports and not be aware of the context, etc.

Above all, avoid venting about a mod's decision. If you wake up one day and feel like giving a mod sh*t, it's best to send it this way. I don't like seeing good people banned for months at a time for a momentary lapse in judgement.

I honestly do.

I pick and choose when I do, but i fully support the action. IMO, if they get their panties in a bunch over that, then they won't be able to handle all of the personalities in here. Also, it weeds out the people who join simply due to the higher rep power presence in hopes of improving their own.
Side note: There is really too much worry about rep on here. There was a real incident with a member of the shack sold his 147k rep power account to a member of the misc for $147 actual dollars ($1 per 1k). That person apparently ran around negging people now that he finally had "power" and got banned in a few days. It is retarded. So if they're coming in here jsut to get rep, they'll leave upon receiving the negs.


But if they that so seriously, they will probably take everything else too seriously and constantly be pissing and moaning. /mythoughts

Like I said, I get that the rules are being upheld. That's your job. The real question is whether a) the rules make sense and b) whether they can be enforced relatively uniformly. I really don't have much issue with the rules here, but it doesn't take long to figure out there are many cases of "selective enforcement". Still no big deal, IMO, most of the time. In the case of this thread I do think, however, that since other mods know that you participate in this thread, they'd do you the service of letting you handle things.

This is the one rule that I think makes moderators look bad. If you're gonna wear the xbox controller of justice, be a big enough boy to let the children b!tch about decisions. If you were fair and consistent and acted appropriately, most people will understand that what was done was fair and right - and likely say so. Nobody in authority should be afraid of being accountable for their actions in the world of public opinion. If they are, then they might want to question whether they're making the right calls.

To be clear: I'm not complaining here, nor implying any specific moderator isn't doing a good job. Just discussing the point.

What I can tell you is if you were a moderator for a while, especially looking after the Misc., you'd probably develop a much shorter fuse and ultimately tolerate less BS. If you've got a 9-5 job, family, you train a few nights a week, you're not going to waste all your time moderating carefully dissecting every single post that gets reported, given you're working for free. You'd try to quickly identify if a rule was broken, infract/ban/delete/close, and move on to the next one.

At the end of the day much like officials in sport, it's a thankless job.
