Hi everyone,
I've always had a banana in my protein shakes post workout, but I understand that I need to be having a high glycemic carb and I'm not sure if the banana does it; especially since I crave sugar afterwards, so...
What is a good high glycemic fruit to add to your post workout protein shake?
I don't want to buy dextrose or gatorade as money is at a negative right now!
Any suggestions please??

Bananas for dayzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!
Do not worry too much about high glycemic carbs PWO (especially if you are having a solid pre-workout meal). Just get your carbs in PWO. Bottom line.Last edited by PBateman2; 04-17-2010 at 10:50 AM.

As above stated and as I stated in post above, doesn't have to be a high glycemic carb. Thats the point. Any CHO for PWO will do. You certainly can have it if you like.
I prefer a combo of high/low glycemic carbs PWO. Just preference so do whats best for you.

I personally like either some gatorade powder if i'm in a rush and can't blend my shake, if I can get to my blender I always go some mixed berries with a half a banana in my shake

Today I used fresh strawberries and since they weren't that tasty I added a teaspoon of strawberry preserves to make it taste like a strawberry shake.

High GI carbs like Gatorade powder or dextrose are OK for ectomorphs( or "hard gainers") and mesomorphs when trying to build size. They can be not so good though for endomorphs because the insulin spike may be too severe, resulting in unwanted fat retention. Adding some fruit such as berries ( I love strawberries) along with the banana would be a good alternative there.
As to the amount of carbs, what I have read and adhere to is a ratio of carbs in grams to protein in the post workout period. The ratio can be anywhere from 1 to 1 to 3 to 1 with the latter being ectomorphs. LaVida, I would advise you do at least 1 to 1, so if you are only taking 18 grams of protein, then the banana at 18 is sufficient.
I'm a guy, an ecto/meso. I do 2 to 1 in my offseason with 60 grams of High GI (including Gatorade Powder) and 20 grams of lower GI fruit, and cut it back to 1.5 to 1 when I am "cutting"."People listen to rich folks. People they pray for poor folks"- John Thompson, long time head basketball coach at Georgetown University.
