We had friends and family at my house for the superbowl. Other than the rest of my family and friends, I have a bil that I have never been particular fond of. Every time he comes over to my house, he tries to take over everything and acts like it is his house. Now back to the superbowl, he has no interest in football, but acts like he his an authority of the game. I have no problem with that, but here is the kicker. The game starts, and he immediatly grabs the remote. O.K., I am a little pissed, but no big deal. Then he proceeds to push the mute button after the commercials to talk about them when the game is going on. After the 2nd time this happened, I politely told him to unmute, because we wanted to listen to the game. He made some smart assed remark about you could still watch the game. I told him this was my gawddamned house and we want to listen to the game. He then threw the remote to me, and boy was I pissed. I didn't want to make a scene in front of 30+ people, so I waited until he went outside to take a wizz, and then I decked him. I didn't hurt him that bad, but just enough to bloody him up pretty good. He came back in the house, grabbed his family and left. I feel bad because we had so many people over, and it was an embarrasing scene. Now I don't know if I regret what I did, but it is keeping me awake.

Meh, you gave him a chin check and you took it outside. I'm sure he'll live
Your relationship with him will never be the same. But you got your point across
I'm sure you could have handled it differently, but you didnt.
So its no longer whether you fuked up or not.

It is what it is Brother.... Give an inch and he will take a foot. Sometimes you gotta put foot to ass to get your point across if verbal doesn't work. Call him tomorrow and talk it out... If he doesn't want to hear it... Fuk em. Im sure you didn't beg him to come by the house anyway.
Its supposed to hurt, its an ass kickin!

So let me get this straight.

Arrogant sounds like another adjective you could use....now if he realizes his ways and comes back and takes responsibility for his behavior, you got nothing to feel bad about. Of course you didn't say if you explained what he did to him and he came back with an ass remark.
I'm open to any suggestions and have a difficult time accepting limitations without an honest effort on my part, you can count on that!

I have only two rules when I visit someone's house.
1. I don't take over the television set for any reason, even if that person is watching a dumb show (IMO) or plays with the remote. It's their house and they can do what they like. Same deal with playing music I may not care for.
2. I never disrespect his wife's cooking. Even if it tastes like sawdust I'll just smile, choke it down, and have done with it.
I expect no less from my house guests.
FWIW, So-Tex, while it may be an overreaction on your part, Cowboy-bitch() gave the best advice. From now on, see what happens and handle it accordingly."Don't call me Miss Kitty. Just...don't."--Catnip. Check out the Catnip Trilogy on Amazon.com

The wife is O.K. now. It is me and my adrenaline factor right now, and right/wrong factor. I could have had an intelligent conversation with him about what I expect when you come to my house, but I truly believe that it would have made no difference. Now I will never know.

We have just the opposite problem in our family. The wife and I rarely watch TV, and we've always had a rule that when it's time to eat, no tv, radio, no answering the phone, etc. It's our family time to have uniterrupted conversations. Her side of the family are TV addicts. They have multiple TVs and they are on 24/7. However, as much as those rattle boxes bother me at thier house as multiple sets are blaring at once, I respect thier place and don't touch the remotes nor pitch a fit. They know the rule at our house and have to go "Cold Turkey" for an hour to an hour and a half, but same thing: they know our rules and respect them also. As for family issues, I've learned a long time ago that there are "relatives" and there is "Family".

Am I the only one that thinks this man going outside of the house to pee is wrong No indoor plumbing?
So-Tex it seems this guy deserved it, obviously he has a history of being disrespectful to you and the family. At least you gave him the respect of waiting until he went outside and did not humiliate him in front of the family. Maybe now he will think twice before going over to someone's house and being disrespectful.
