Which one is better for energy/gaining weight/muscle?
I only use it pre, during, and post workout, if that makes a difference.

Dextrose and Maltodextrin are too close in composition to bother splitting hairs about them. Both are easily absorbed glucose. Personally I use Now Foods Carbo Gain 100% Maltodextrin powder to mix with my shake. Previously, I was using table sugar in my shake but all those heaps of sugar were disgustingly sweet. The maltodextrin in contrast is only mildly sweet and tastes great!
I believe dextrose is slightly cheaper than malto. I bought my malto online for $10 bucks total with shipping for a 2 lb. tub. If you shop it online you find it for about that price. Try Now Foods they seem like a reliable company.

Dextrose
Typically I use Dextrose pre-workout only on my cutting cycle. With a low carb diet I typically still allow sugar right at workout time, it slows down my weight loss a little bit but I'm ok with that because it helps with energy and lean gains. During my workout I just rely on my pre-workout supplement and don't take more dextrose during my intra-workout time, but post workout I will always take some to spike my insulin levels and to help me absorb my creatine and amino acids. (I do this regardless of bulking or cutting.) Hope this helps. -Josh

Dextrose would be my choice if I only had those two to choose from, but I'd opt for karbolyn over any source. I had good success with Chain'd Reaction which is basically modified potato starch, but when I switched to karbolyn I was able to decrease my servings by 20 grams and felt even better.
