Squat Box
I need one for box squats of course and I did search to see the results of what some had said. Other than the overwhelming response to build your own, i would just rather buy a metal one that is adjustable. The one I originally wanted was from Elite Lifts but came to 229 with freight. The other one is a TDS product from new york barbells. It is far cheaper in freight and total price. So I guess the questions are is TDS a good brand? and Is new york barbells a reputable site to buy from?
Box in question-
Thanks

i've seen that tds on ebay once in a while. someone sells new ones on there.
yea, i think pullbig bought one- he picked it up at nybb's store. if you order from the site, call and check on shipping, i've read that you can get a better price if you call.

I've never ordered from NY Barbell, but a friend of mine has, on 2 occasions. He says no problem with them at all.

I've bought a calf block and a couple smaller things from them and never had any issues.

I have this exact one and yes I bought it from TDS. I like that it's adjustable and it does the simple job it's made for.
I'm a big believer in box squats which stengthen your hammies and glutes. If done correctly they will help with your normal squats.

hi blue. i'm getting to be a big believer in them, too. my last 2 squat workouts i did box squats after my back squats- my hams and glutes definately feel them. between ghr and box squats, hopefully i can get some decent (meaning strong) hammies.

Alright...consider me a noob on this. I have never done box squats that I can remember. But I dont see what the difference would be or why it was assist in targeting a different muscle area.
Going to research it now...
Could I use my Plyo box for this?

The trick is to make them a regular part of your routine and they need to be done correctly which you are doing because you are feeling it in your hammies and glutes.
They truly help with getting out of the hole when driving up doing regular squats.
Will for sure help increase weight load for squats. ..and slamming looking hammies rock !
Now if I would only get around to building my squat board ...lol...it's been so long since I bought the "how to " on how to build it I can't even remember the name of it.
Quad Blaster ?

You can but everyone's legs are different (Length) and an adjustable box is better.

I've never done them either but have considered adding them in, I figure next year sometime. After I get through a few cycles of Madcow I figure I will be ready for giving The Westside Method a try, then I will need a box probably, I figure I will be strong enough to have identifiable weak points by then
Anyways your Plyo boxes usually don't work well for a couple of reasons. First you need to have a box with straight sides so yo can get you butt well back over the box. Second you really want a sturdy solid box because if you set it above parallel your weights lifted can really go pretty high and you need a box that can handle that plus you too. The stackable Plyo boxes of crossfit fame might be a better choice as they would even add the adjustability you would want for a complete box squat set-up, you just better be damn sure there is no way they could slide out of alignment under you no matter how hard you bumped them.

Well thanks a lot folks...just one more thing I "need" to buy now!
By the way, this is the best article that I have found (so far) in my box squat research.
It is 99% about form.

How wide does one set their feet on the box squat I have just started them in the Bigger Faster Stronger program by friend got from his high school. At the current moment i just use a regular bench and set them outside of shoulder ranges, but not to the extent of the article. Should they be that wide to get the full effectiveness?

The guys in the video are setting them that wide because thats what they do when the compete in powerlifting. Your feet shouldn't be significantly wider than your normal squat stance, however, if you don't usually do at least an athletic style of low bar squat using the box properly really isn't going to work.

yes, it says in the article that your box squat setup should be about the same as your regular squat. i think my feet get a few inches wider, but nothing drastic like the super wide foot placement they are using.

See....box squats are on the program that I am currently doing (WS4SB). And I havent done them yet, but planned on just using my bench, which sits very very low to the ground. Now Im not sure what to do, but I want to find a way to do these for free or cheap. I MIGHT set my shorter plyo box in there to see if it fits well, but because of the design of them (they are wider at the bottom), I dont think they will work well.

I've done box squats with plyo-boxes, and the work perfectly fine if you don't square them up with your feet. Turn the box so it forms a diamond between your legs. The base shouldn't interfere with your stance that way.

Good point brother. I guess my only concern then is whether it would be the proper height. I guess there is only one way to find out.
