I haven't called in to work sick since October 2005. Missed 1 day. And that was 2 employers back. Last company I was there 2.5 years without a sick day and I've worked here 3.5 years and have not yet taken a sick day.
Prior to that my last sick day was January 2001, but I was really sick and missed 3 days.
Almost did today, though...I feel like crap and have had a headache all week. And I almost NEVER get headaches. I didn't want to break my 'streak' though.
I know lots of people call in 'sick' when they aren't even sick. Pissed off, lazy, tired, hungover, need to do personal stuff, etc.
I never do that.
So what about you? Do you take adavantage, use sick days when you need them, or show up every day regardless?

Technically I get 18 day for personal leave a year which I'm not complaining about. The thing that blows is I do copier machine delieveries, so I really can't randomly call out sick if their is deliveries that day. In addition to what Isiberian said when I get back to work my work has just piled up.

I think I've used a sick day or two for operations and ER visits but otherwise I typically don't get sick enough to warrant missing a day and frankly, with two toddlers at home I get more rest at the office. I have used a number of sick days staying at home to deal with sick kids, kids' deliveries, etc.

Last time it happened I was out with my boss the previous night with the company card. Ended up calling him on his cell and told him it wasn't safe for me to be driving and told him I would take it as a vacation day. He said "screw that I'm not driving either and I'm sure as hell not using a vacation day".

Just realized in that thread I got my first ban for talking about foxtails in my lawn
I actually did go to work, got banned and ban lifted before I got home.

I take sick days when I'm sick and not feeling well. I also use sick time for doctor's appointments. I don't abuse sick time, if I want a personal day I use vacation, but if I'm not feeling well I figure that's why they give it to me. Plus I do no one any good when I go into the office contagious or miserable.

My last two companies only had PTO, so I would never call in sick. I think my current company has sick time, but I'd have to be near death to use it. Besides, I can always work from home if I'm really that sick.

I rarely get sick.
I get injured some times (at the gym) and need "mental health days", the latter, fairly frequently.
In my line of work, I need to be functioning 100%...mentally and physically. My employer recognizes this and provides adequate benefits.
I cannot go to work depressed and do suicide intervention nor counselling.
I cannot go to work with any hint of contageous virus as the kids might get sick.
Even when I'm hobbling with DOMS from leg day I try not to show it as it might be perceived as a sign of weakness/opportunity for some of the more hard core gang members I've worked with.
My field has a tremendously high burnout rate, 2 years and you're usually done.
I've been doing this for 12. The more I look after me, the more I am able to continue to help others

never have called in sick.
I had emergency surgery so obviously I couldnt make it the next day but other then that nothing.
I missed a day when my car broke down on the way in once.
i work with all women, they call in sick once a week. they seem to find great difficulty working an entire work week. always something coming up. You can practically count on at least one of them being sick when we work saturdays and we work every saturday.

I can work from home, if needed, so unless I (or one of my kids) am REALLY sick, I don't call in sick. I will, on occasion, call in sick if something comes up last minute and I need the day off. I get 6 days per year and take maybe 1. Some years none.

That seems a little closed minded. As I said, I'll call in when I'm not necessarily sick. If my employer decides to view me as mentally weak and undependable despite the extra hours I put in during the week and on the weekend, I'd find another employer.

I take sick days when our children are sick. My wife is a teacher, so it is more difficult for her to drop everything and take a day off.
I typically take one or two sick days per year, sometimes more if I have something serious.
My personal stance: if you are coming down with something or still contageous, it is selfish, inconsiderate and inefficient to go in and expose other people. If you're sick, check your ego and stay home. If you have some major important thing to do that no one else can do, then go do it and leave.
I have asked people to go home as they look like crap and obviously were not going to get any better by staring at the wall wishing they were in bed.Journal- One of the Ogres

We have PTO only. They lumped all our accrued hours into a single account. It makes accounting easier and none of the hours go against earned OT like the old system did.
The only time I've missed due to being not able to come into work was 2007 with sinus surgery, 2009 with the flu for 3 days, parts of 2011, 2012 and this year with my car accident related activities.
I switched jobs internally last year and the work load has dropped off dramatically, so I forsee lots of 3 & 4 day weekends this summer. We do get cashed out for any time over 80 hours carried into the following year at 50%, so there is an incentive to take time off. I have to take about 280 hours in 2013.

I appreciate when co-workers call in sick instead of valiantly spreading their disease all over the office like some sort of saintly martyr.
