    why sweet potato?

I have a classmate 20 yrs ago and he became a pro basketball player. I met him last week on ******** and his shape is awesome. He gave me tips on working out as well as diet. He suggested that I should eat sweet potato. I also saw a bodybuilder on youtube buying a microwave so he can cook his sweet potato. What is with sweet potato?

    Nothing magical about them.

I don't care for them so I rarely eat them.

If you like them eat them, if not, don't.

I looked up sweet potatoes vs white potatoes. I specifically wanted to find out which had the lower glycemic index. And it was what I thought it to be. Sweet potatoes are lower on the chart. What does this mean and how does it relate to him being in great shape?

"Selecting foods with lower GI levels promotes normal blood sugar levels, and enables the body to stay in a fat burning mode." http://www.janetzappala.com/ask-coac...glycemic-index

So to answer your question but I suggest researching off of what I found here, is that eating sweet potatoes are a great substitute for whites potatoes. And eating a diet that promotes normal blood sugar levels promotes a lean body.

As discussed, the sweet potato has the lower GI. In ley terms, it is a great carb source that is used up much slower that a white potato. Oats are a great pre work out carb also. Think sustained energy as opposed to a spike. The white potato may be better for post work out for someone who does not take a Post work out shake. That higher GI means rapid nutrients for muscle recovery. This would also be the best time for any sugar, such as gatorage (dextrose) or even some fruit.

And this ^^ also. Yes, they are lower on the GI scale than a white potato, they have a lot of nutritional value. I personally think they are delish but if you taste them and find you don't really care for them, you don't have to eat them.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge folks! I really appreciate. Glad my wife had sweet potatoes in our refrigerator. I microwaved one for 6 minutes. I wrapped it in wet paper towel. It became soft but just perfectly right. I used to eat sweet potatoes but they were fried along with red sugar. We call it kamote-Q.

Anyways back to my microwaved one, the taste was phenomenal!!! The smell is heaven too!!! Aight folks, I'm heading to my gym now.

Steam them. Microwaves are horrible to the foods. But i don't want to discuss that here, just google it and read more pages than you can stay awake for.

Anyways, if you go to a self checkout lane and you have sweet potatoes and cannot find them on the list look for YAMS. LOL

Baked,boiled,steamed,fried,mashed....they are an excellent food.I prefer the white over the orange ones but they are all good. Some like them, some don't.I grow my own and they pretty much grow wild once you plant a few tubers, very tenacious and easy to store....leave them in the ground until you want them.

Never store in the refrigerator! And I agree with not microwaving. Steamed, boiled, or baked is far better. They reheat well so you can cook several at a time.

Don't get too caught up on the sweet potatoe. People often have things that they attribute to there health/looks. Sweet potatoe probably accounted for 1% of his success. The fact that he plays pro basketball, trains a lot, competes a lot, has good genetics for his chosen sport, and eats a generally good diet probably has a lot more to do with it. Just find a good carb that YOU like and can digest easily, and in a few years you'll be telling someone about ________ .

Just had some last night eating out, came with all sorts of weird accessories thank God I said don't put anything on it leave all the stuff on the side. I'll never understand why people put brown sugar and strange syrups and marshmallows in their sweet potatoes, the damn things taste great all by themselves. I usually just get smaller ones and bake a whole tray at a time, easy breasy just reheat at work and eat like an apple skin and all along with my chicken breasts.

Yes and along the same lines, can't remember what thread, but there was a bit of an argument about whether sweet potato or white potato was better, and Alan Aragon chimed in that there is no "best" - better to eat both, since they have different nutritional characteristics.

Thanks a lot folks! Just not sure why microwaving it is bad. I can't find anything about it on the internet. It's ok, I can steam it.

AND, it they are dry as a desert rock. I like to cut em up and sprinkle with cinnamon and splenda, and bake them. outrageous. Also, boil, mash, and add cin, splenda, vanilla, and almonds. POW!

I didn't read every response thoroughly....but....I love 'em with cinnamon and butter. More importantly (IMO) is the anti-oxidant properties of the darker colored sweet potatoes. I prefer the dark orange and will keep them in my eating orgies. Carry on...

I microwave my sweet taters. Wash it, cut in half, sprinkle with cinnamon powder (no sugar) and nuke on high for 6 minutes. Delicious, and ideal food for cutting. You can eat a lot of sweet potato and not get a lot of calories!

I have no idea either but it feels good after eating it!
It is simple, it is bright in color, it is easy to cook, cheap, available and it tastes great with black coffee and topped with my favorite Greek yogurt and cinnamon!

Sweet potatoes are delicious and nutritious...and......well.......sweet.... I gave up white rice for sweet taters years ago.. And I'm Asian, so for an Asian dude to NOT eat rice is sacrilegious. Sweet taters all the way..

I much prefer "standard" potatoes, be they pinkeyes, red-skinned, yellow-fleshed, big ol' baking taters, or whatever else.

Sweet potato is... okay. Nothing special. There are other vegetables I would (and do) pick before them, nearly every time. If a recipe calls for them, I use them. That's about the extent of my "love" for them, lol.

Note: I feel the same way about pumpkin, fwiw... Hm, and I'm also a fan of wheat bread (and rye, mind you...) and other very "conventional" foods, I suppose. Eh, each to their own.
