You have a lot more fat on you than you want to admit.... "Healthy" is body fat under 20%. Abs start to appear around 15%. Most guys want to shoot for that 10% body fat, but that is a long road from 5'9" and 240 lbs

5'9"... a good target weight for you is probably 160-170
A diet isn't punishment. A diet is a way to reward your body with the wholesome, nutritious food that it needs. Your body composition is a direct reflection of what you put in your mouth.

While I agree that most people drastically underestimate their fat percentages, what exactly makes you say this guy has more body fat than 27 %?

because that would give him 175 lbs of LBM which is ridiculous for someone who is 5'9 and sounds like a beginner.

175 pounds of lean mass on someone 5'9" is a lot, even for a large frame.

Most guys that are in good shape (15% BF or less) are not much more than 165 pounds and are pretty muscular at that height and weight.

Check out XNickEdgeX's profile, guys is close to that size and very lean.

The chances of a guy who is just starting to workout having 170 pounds of lean mass at that height are pretty unlikely. Many people overestimate fat mass because of some crappy scale or online calulator.

I have a pretty large frame for my height (49-50" shoulders) and probably around 140-150 pounds of lean mass. That would put the OP (2" taller than me) with more than 25 pounds of lean mass on me. He would have to be truly massive at his height to carry that amount of lean mass and not be an ex-lifter or something like that. Even then, that's a lot.

He is not accusing you of lying, but likely of being mistaken. Bodyfat determination methods (especially the self-administered varieties) are notoriously inaccurate. Skinfold testing isn't the best choice for high %BF people either, even professionally-administered.

Start off by reading the losing fat for newbies sticky at the top of this forum, then come back with any specific questions you might have.

You say you want a "lean" body, but lean is somewhat subjective. Most people won't have much in the way of larger localized accumulations (gut/love-handles) of bodyfat in the low teens %BF, and truly visible abs start to come in closer to 10%. This varies depending on one's muscularity and particular bodyfat distribution. But basically, you are going to have to find out for yourself where that lies.
