Only downside with training forearms specifically is that if your forearms aren't already really strong, it can get in the way of certain exercises like preacher curls. I've noticed that since I started doing a lot more back work (heavy shrugs, rows) and focused biceps/shoulder work (dumbbell raises and preacher curls), that my forearms have started getting significantly bigger.
I focused on forearms one day about a month ago and then ended up giving myself a wicket case of ulnar-splints the next day doing preacher curls. I had to lay off the preacher curls and revamp my whole workout routine for a good 2-3 weeks to let my forearms recover.
Annoying as hell.
