    Elevated liver enzymes?

Dr calls with some of my blood test results, couldn't hear very well since I was out walking and in the middle of nowhere Ohio but what i got was my Cholesterol was pretty high even though it's always been low. And he is concerned my liver enzymes were basically off the chart, he doesn't know why and wants to wait 2 weeks and retest to see if it was a fluke or what.

I don't even really know what the fck liver enzymes are, going to google and see what pops up.

Ok I checked it out and basically it could be nothing or it could be something like Hepatitis or Crohns. Going to have to wait for the restest and see what happens. Read it could also be from something as simple as Ibuprofren and I have been popping a number of those lately as my knees and back have been bothering me. Going to lay off that $hit and just deal with it for the time being.

Do you drink? That I know for sure is one way which folks can end up with high liver enzymes.

    protein shakes can cause this.

    alcohol too.

I had the same thing. If I recollect correctly my AST or ALT levels were at least double the normal range.

The doc swore I was an alcoholic and looked at me suspiciously when I told him I only drink maybe once or twice a month. He asked me did I binge drink..........

He swore that I'd have scarring of the liver (or something like that)

I had to get an ultrasound done on my liver and kidneys 2 weeks later. No lifting and no protein shakes for 2 weeks. Tests and ultrasound came out fine.

EDIT - Here's a link. You can also google "protein shakes and liver enzymes"

Well, at least you can basically rule out the alcohol. I have never had high enzyme levels due to protein shakes (or otherwise), but I never have more than one per day.

Several years ago I had some high readings. Did the ultrasound and re-tested BUT I didn't lift or take ibuprofen (which he prescribed, LOL!). Test came back fine. Turns out both working out and the ibuprofen can elevate the liver counts. Been fine since.

In my experience (and many others "at least on the Internet"), yes. But long term "I don't think" it's much to worry about (Can't say "I don't know" I'm no doc).

If you have to retest in two weeks I'd just take a break from training for the time being and cut back on the protein intake.

That worked for me to bring my levels back into a normal range.

High protein in general can cause these readings. I would make sure your doctor knows about the amounts of protein your taking in, as well as any other sups, such as creatine. Does your doctor know what your doing, bodybuilding?

Go to your local health food store. Find a product called either Liv52 or Liv-a-New. Takes care of liver issues (which also arise from lots of ibuprofin)

Are you taking any other medications? Ibuprofen shouldn't cause your enzymes to be elevated, but infections, liver disease, and certain medications can.

    x2 on the protein supplementation.

I was taking half what I read was the "max" to supplement for my size/level of activity, got liver enzyme results way high. No one could figure it out.
Got very sick and had to have a surgery (not related). Couldn't supp protein for over 30 days. Liver enzymes went down to normal. Evidently some folks just can't handle it. No more protein supps for me.

It could be fatty liver too. Not sure if this applies to you but fat people tend to have a lot of fat on their organs which causes them to not work correctly. Elevated liver enzymes is one thing that can be caused by this. Just a FYI.

I lifted the day before the test, no idea on macros since I don't keep track. And don't know what the actual numbers were, like I mentioned it was on the phone and i'm half deaf on that damn thing anyways. Will get all the numbers when I go in 2 weeks for a retest.

Lay off training, protien supps, and pain killers/anti-inflams for about 10-14 days, then have your counts checked again. Most likely they will show normal.
Good luck and hope it's nothing serious.

This what I am doing, if levels are normal then at least I know 2-3 things that are causing it and won't concern myself.

[QUOTE=eomrat;743711783 Also, eating two Bigmacs, taking 300mg of dat der cell-tec and washing it all down with 1/2 liter of cheap vodka may not have been a great idea.

    wait, nevermind... that was me.[/QUOTE]

So the limit is 2 Bigmacs? What if you substituted a 20 piece nuggets for one of the macs?

What if I switch that out for Captain Morgans Tattoo rum? Surely a bottle of rum can't be bad for the liver?

Yup! When I weighed 360, my liver enzymes were sky high, so they did an ultrasound and told me I had fatty liver. 3-4 years later after changing lifestyle and losing 70 lbs, enzymes are normal. But that was me, and I was heading for trouble. Liver damage could have resulted in cirrhosis if I let it continue.

I know someone who went through this too. I wouldn't do anything til you get retested because then you won't know what to rule out as the cause. For the record, I know two people in the last 2 months who had similar issues with lab draws and were fine when they were retested. Also, I know someone who had liver tests comes back double of what the high end range was and Tylenol was the culprit. Doc swore he was an alcoholic, wanted to do all kinds of other testing and stuff. Sometimes I think they bypass the simple solutions. He also took Solaray Liver blend. After stopping tylenol and taking Solaray, enzyme counts were in the middle of the range. Good thing for routine testing that tells us we are harming ourselves with stuff we may be taking. I would def wait til after the next set of testing though because it could be something else.

Man be careful with the ibuprofen.. a couple years back I had some problems with tooth pain. Multiple teeth needed help, I was popping 16-20 ibuprofen per day for about a year and a half. Well had the teeth fixed then i came down with this crazy lower back pain. Pop some more ibuprofen... The back pain became so bad i couldn't stand it. The final stage i broke out in monster Hives the size of porterhouse steaks for real!!! My body was shutting down .. i was poisoning myself with too much ibuprofen. I went to bed one nite with 104 fever one nite covered with monster hives and woke up 2 days later lol... Had sweated about 10 lbs off !! That was it never took another one since... the back pain was from my kidneys shutting down. Moral of the story everything in Moderation :-)

As many know I am a former heavy drinker and I have been through this with the enzymes readings since changing my lifestyle. Many things can affect these numbers and drinking alcohol is the first. protein, hard lifting, bad food choices, all affect the outcome. My .2 is lay off any alcohol for two weeks, no excessive protein for two days and any lifting for 1 week and make sure you fast properly the night before the test. No coffee or anything else, just water for 12 hours (not easy). It makes a huge difference in the numbers. I was sober for over a year but was still had high AST and others because of my new lifestyle. Take a break from the extreme and do the tests as indicated and it makes a huge differernce. You have to remember that these tests are for regular folks, not protein swilling bodybuilders.

Edit: Drink a ****load of water for two days prior. It helps the liver clear the poisons.
