It doesn't always have to be running..but make sure it is always high intesity if you are trying to lose weight..hit the bike, oliptical, or the stairclimber..switch it up a bit, otherwise it gets boring. Cardio is never fun, but if we want to keep the fat off, it is a must do.

I hate running also. I started jumping rope and bought a speedbag. When jumping rope I speed jump and change up the jump every 20 seconds so it doesnt get boring. I also picked up one of Alan Kahn's speedbag videos and books to keep the speedbag from getting boring. He shows how to hit the bag from all angles along with your elbows and has some good combinations to try.

I hate running too but I'm in weight losing mode so I force myself to do it. I usually alternate between the treadmill and the elliptical. I enjoy the elliptical a lot more.

Do some conditioning work, fullbody circuits or BB complexs..
Burpees, Jumping Jacks, Situps
Pullups, DB Lunges, Bench Press, and Crunches, all performed rigth after each other with no rest between sets, would be an example of a nice FB circuit or giant set
BB Complexes are exercises all done in a row with a barbell: Snatches, Overhead Presses, Back Squats, Bent Rows, SLDLs

I shoot the rock for a good 20 minutes, then grab the jump rope and can easily pound out 1,000 jumps in under 5 minutes, then go to a treadmill and put the incline at 10 at around 3.7-4 and walk that for 10 minutes. Try that and see what it does for ya. Oh yea, forgot to mention, I do this all before I lift too and am sitting at 194 now.

Cardio can be fun and that also makes it easier to get more acomplished. Swimming, biking (acutally going somewhere), gymnastics, freerunning, get friends and play frisbee, football, etc. etc.
Also things like this work more muscles and also build coordination, speed, and joints as opposed to just sitting on an exersize bike.

Swimming
I agree with free runner, with the exception of swimming. Although swimming is one of the best cardio vascular exercises to increase your endurance... its terrible for burning fat which I believe is your goal. Because you are in water your core temp never rises too high and you dont burn as much fat as you would with running/biking.

This is the kind of thing that 99.9% of people do not need to worry about.
The difference cardio makes for your average physique trainereis much more about total caloric expenditure, and not much at all about the particular metabolic fuel used during the activity. (Save for muscle, of course).
Whether you are burning a few more hundred calories per week directly from lipids in your bloodstream vs simply burning off carbohydrate is going to make about zero difference in how you look at the end of the month.http://youtube.com/user/Kiknskreem

Running sucks when you suck at running. I used to hate running, too, but follow this program (start at week seven: two minutes running, 28 minutes walking), and before you know it, you'll be running 3+ miles and hardly break a sweat.
