    Sodium's effect on bodybuilding

We have lots of talk in this forum on the effects of a lack of or surplus of carbs, protein, sugars, fat, etc.

One thing that comes up every so often is sodium, yet most of what I see is just pro-low-sodium intake. I know that 2-3g a day of sodium is ideal, but my question is this:

What is the effect of sodium on a bodybuilder, particularly when bulking or cutting? In other words, health considerations aside-- If what I'm concerned with is gaining muscle or losing fat and eating correctly to ensure that this occurs, what is my concern with sodium? I know it causes water retention, but this is momentary...

Increased blood pressure is the primary health concern associated with excessive sodium intake. But then again, since heart disease is the leading cause of death in North America, it's probably a pretty big concern.

increase sodium is not ideal for cutting as it promotes water retention in the body
