Seriously. I'm tired of all these "fans" cheering for Wisconsin/USC/Texas/Bama when they didn't even attend the university. Nothing more degrading to a student/alumni IMO. I'm sure people who cheer for their team that actually went to the school would feel the same way.

If you want to cheer for a college sports team, you should go/graduate from there...

Not necessarily, though I agree somewhat. If you have ties to a team through some other way. Dwayne Jarrett played in my conference while I was in high school and when he went to USC he started to make a name for himself. Brian Cushing also had a lot of hype coming out of Bergen Catholic so I watched pretty much all the USC games. Didn't hurt that Reggie Bush was ****ting on everyone at the time also. Now that I have nobody to support on the team I could care less about USC. And the reason I followed them goes for all the other athletes that come out of Jersey I played against or watched in high school.

This ranks up there with some of the most stupid things I have ever read on this website.
I hate bandwagon fans as much as the next guy but to say you cant cheer for a university if you arent alumni is creating a ridiculously high standard for such a trivial thing as sports.
What is your criteria for professional teams?

From the area/local. Or in a case like yours (small markert) from the state. I hate seeing "fans" from miami cheering for the lakers and vice versa, but I can understand a guy from connecticut cheering for the yankees or so. Nomsayin'
but for college teams, go to the school before you cheer for them. this "i didn't go but im a fan" sh*t has got to stop.

There are 3 loopholes to your criteria:
1. If my good friend/family member went to Oklahoma St., you can bet your ass I just became a fan to support them.
2. If my city's local star makes it big, I feel you have the right to root for the team he's on. I live 5 mins away from the high school Tedy Bruschi attended and I know a lot of my friends parents were lightweight fans of the Pats because of that. I realize this isn't a huge reason, but you could make the argument.
3. If you were RAISED to be a fan of a team via father/family origin. My grandma and dad were both born in Texas. I have never even been there, yet I am a huge Dallas Cowboys fan. In addition, I was raised to be a Texas fan and to despise Texas Tech. You know how much it would cost for me to attend those schools (with out of state tuition!?) lol it just wasn't in the cards.
So there you go, some valid reasons to be a fan of a team.Sacramento Kings | Dallas Cowboys | San Jose Sharks

re: pro teams
Having to root for a team based on location is bullshyt.
As a kid, I was obsessed with the Cowboys. That obsession is still alive today. I don't have to be from Texas to be a true fan.
The definition of a true fan to me is being loyal and sticking with your team, and that team only, from day 1. Doesn't matter where you're from.

Buckeye born and bred, Buckeye til I'm dead. Best friend growing up was a 2nd string DT on the '02 National Championship team. Another good friend played Basketball at Ohio State and set plenty of records as a frosh. 60% of my friends from high school went there and I would have went there too if my family didn't decide to pack up and move to Michigan one random night.
