So, I'm doing Rippetoe's Starting Strength right now, and I thought I had hit a plateau on squats at 290 lbs. Well, yesterday before my workout I drank half of a Rockstar energy drink. I was planning on resetting the weight back to 260lbs or so, but I felt pretty good, so I decided I'd go for 295 lbs. I did my warmup sets and then loaded all of the plates on the bar. I walked out with the weight and did two reps. At this point I had to rerack the weight because I was convinced that I had put 25 lb plates on instead of the 35 lb ones. To my astonishment, the weight was actually 295 lbs. I did all of my sets/reps (3x5) with excellent form.
I'm just astonished what a difference drinking an energy drink made in my workout. On Wednesday, 290 lbs on squat felt like it was going to kill me, but 295 lbs on Friday was incredibly easy. Squat wasn't the only lift that went well either. I got 135lbs on my military press for the very first time.
My question is this... Is there a better kind of energy supplement I could take before my workouts without all of the sugar? I can't afford to buy any of the NO stuff that a lot of people take; is there some kind of cheap supplement I could use that would have the same energizing effects for my workouts?

Well... it probably was the fact that you were believing in yourself, and adding confident. However, the drink probably helped too. A good alternative is coffee, but drinking and eating that kind of stuff is likely to increase your immunity to it. Basically, just take one whenever you feel like lifting heavy weights, or need to "peak" or something like that.
Push-ups- 500
Chin-ups- 80 to 100
Dips- 150
Clapper push-ups- 80
You want to try it?

Coolness nailed it, but speaking of energy drinks I really liked.. Endorush comes to mind from BSN the bottle has 4 servings in it. Only problem is I took it like crack and now it takes more than one bottle to give me a good caffiene buzz.. so save energy drinks for the heavy days!

I would really suggest trying the NO Xplode. It is the best pre-workout drink for me.
NO Xplode is $39 for 40 servings, makes it about 0.98 per serving. Rockstar is $2.49, RedBull $2.00 per serving
If you want an alternative you can get a little creative. Prior to bsn I was using Whey Protein Shake mixed with coffee 45 minutes before the workout. Seems to work pretty good as well.
Another thing you can try for energy that will put less strain on your stomach and heart is Yerba Mate tea.

well imo the energy drinks dont work for me, ive probably built such a high tolerance of energy drinks or something but I actually get tired from drinking them not energized. Also if you cant afford to buy the NO stuff i think its more cost effective than buying an energy drink every time u workout. If you want something which cracks you out and is high in caffeine tryout redline, that stuff was crazy on me. Literally i got crazy, i was so hyper.

First of all, this thread is old and shouldn't have been bumped up. Second, I drank an energy drink once and wondered if there was something better. I never stated I was planning on drinking them before every workout.
Please leave me a bit of dignity and don't bump up stupid threads that I created.Journal:

The only reason I posted here was because this thread was displayed as having a recent new post so I didn't bother to check when the last post was.

I about gave a serious answer here. Glad I didn't now. Momma always said, "If you don't have anything serious to say, then don't say anything at all". That's what I am doing here, not saying anything.

I wanted to post this earlier, but couldn't get the link, here's an energy drink that's highly recommended.

Do you think that if you did a couple of shots of Jack before lifting that it would get you pumped to lift teh hyooge poundages? It seems to get some of my friends thinking they can whip the world. So if it can do that for them I wonder what effect it would have on a lifter? Any thoughts?
