    Keto with no Gallbladder?!

I've been doing Keto recently and really been enjoying the foods. However, an interesting point was raised to me...I had my gallbladder out last year and it didn't even occur to me. Can I still do this diet with no gallbladder? Will it not work as well?...Just wondering about any complications. I havent been having any gastro problems or anything but I still wanna know if this diet is safe/effective considering my circumstance.

    Thanks a lot in advance

you can get dietary emulsifiers, they prescribe them for those with fat-sensitive conditions. gallbladder is pretty important lol

You should definitely ask your doctor that. The liver produces bile as well, but if it's short supply you may have problems with digestion. Don't start until you have permission from your doctor.

Can't say for definite, but I do know a lot of people who've had their gallbladder out and have no trouble pigging out on high fat meals, but more the ribs and fries type, not keto. If they can cope with those, I can't see why meat and veg should be a problem.
    65% fat, 30% protein, 5% carbs = keto.

Hmm, it seems that your progress would be somewhat slower if you do not have a gallbladder, since you can't digest all of the fat at once.

I've been on keto for a couple weeks now and haven't seen much difference. Perhaps this diet isn't for those of us without a gallbladder.

I had my gallbladder out 15 -16 years ago. I have been low carbin it for the past couple weeks and have dropped a good ammount of weight. The only thing I've noticed is that I don't crap as much as I used to.

    Hope this helps.

    Hahahah...not quite...

People without gallbladders produce less bile, which is used to digest fat. The liver produces bile, but I'm not sure if it can produce enough to make up for the lost gallbladder, which was the primary producer. They might evacuate more fat than usual in a bowel movement, they may experience some issues with it becoming compacted in the intestine (which can actually happen in individuals with extremely slow intestinal transit due to some illness or morbid obesity), or they may be absorbing less nutrients. Or nothing might happen. I still think it's best to ask a gastro rather than a bunch of people who have no idea what might happen but really like the way of eating.

I had my gall bladder removed 9 yrs. ago. I would be really interested in hearing more of how that impacts a Keto diet.

I will say that I am way more comfortable with a keto diet in terms of stomach comfort. I tried vegetarian, low fat and then keto, to try and help with the complications I had after gall bladder removal.

I understood that bile is produced in the liver, but stored and concentrated in the gallbladder. The gallbladder can secret the concentrated bile when you eat a big fatty meal. However, although people on keto eat a lot of fat, they generally stick to regular small meals, so the amount of bile needed at any one time should not be excessive.

I was thinking about this the other day. I just started Keto this week and wondering the effects of high fat. My doctor told me that my diet was unrestricted and could eat anything that I want. I will report back any ill side affects.

Had my gallbladder out back in the late 90's no problems, except for the occasional diarhea because of an excessive amount of fat and dairy in a meal. I think this speaks more to my lactose sensitivity though. The interesting thing about keto diets, is the actual gram amount of fat typically isn too much higher than a balanced diet. Its true the percentage amount is much higher but not the actual gram amount. Unless you are using keto for maintanence or weight gain (unsure of why other than maybe easier to stay full or feel better). With some fat undigested in GI tract might help with some of the constipation accompanied with keto diets
