So here's a fishing ethics question for you...
Last week I was up north on the annual wilderness retreat with my old HS buddies.
One of them has developed a pretty nasty drinking problem and was rubbing me the wrong way the whole time.
So we go out fishing and he declares we need to get enough fish for a fish fry. But the fish fry wasn't planned until the day after I left.
I'm not very good at cleaning fish, so I said "Hey I'm not cleaning them, but you're welcome to any keepers I catch."
I ended up catching two big keepers. I tossed them in the group's live well.
Well Mr. Drunk ended up keeping like 10 medium size crappies that were on the line of being a keeper size.
Later Mr. Drunk and another guy who's very new to cleaning fish were working away cutting fillets, while me and the other guy who weren't even going to be at the fish fry were eating chili.
Suddenly Mr. Drunk goes completely sideways and declared that I had to clean half of the fish, and that it's wrong for me to leave all the fish to just two guys to clean.
From my perspective I wasn't eating the fish, wasn't taking home any fish and only added 2 to the catch. I think he was just getting tired of cleaning his own small fish. Still he ranted and raved for two days about how me and the other guy were screwing everyone over?6'4"

Yeah I'm gonna agree with that, seems like it was agreed upon that you're donating YOUR fish to THEIR fish fry. Where I come from I'm not cleaning the fish for you to have the privilege of eating them, otherwise I'll just let them go after catching them. You want them, you clean them. Unless I'm out of beer then all bets are off and I'll probably do 5 fish per beer.

I just want some boots.
Yeah I was hoping to put that boat to good use too, would be perfect for running and checking gator lines. I know a guy who's kid got drawn, he had 6 preference points in the draw. Both of my kids had 2 preference points so 4 total. Next year they'll have 6 total so it's gonna happen soon enough. Still waiting on all the deer and hog draws for them.

I can't speak to your area, but yeah definitely the way we fish here you want to be around the sandbars. Sometimes the fish will be in the first gut on the edge of the bar, sometimes in the 2nd, etc. When we run shark baits we always try to drop them on the edge of a sandbar, usually the back side as they'll cruise just behind the sandbar. Move around until you find them and don't stay in one spot for too long. Learn to read the surf, look for anything different, different patterns in the breaking waves indicate various structure on the bottom which can hold fish. Down here we look for cuts, suckouts, pinches, etc. Drive slow and observe, you'll notice a spot where there are no breaking waves on the 2nd sandbar for example... stop and pitch some spoons or plastics in there and see if it produces, if so then fish it a little heavier.

Nainoa, I'd have gotten up in his ass over it and asked him what his fukn problem was. you were decent enough to give them your fish and he's gonna be a dick? I know that's where I stand on that.
Fitty's the one that can clean a sh!tload of fish in a goddamn hurry. He's scary with his SUPAR SPECIAL filet knife. Oh yea, a word to those that go do camp Fitty, DO NOT mess with that knife if you like breathing, you have been warned.

Yeah the big challenge with this guy is that he's a rapacious drunk... No going back for him at this point without some serious in patient treatment...
And the place belongs to his parents, so he plays the tyrant with this veiled threat that he'll just kick you out if you don't obey.
I'm torn because it's been our HS buddy's annual get together for so many years... But in recent years it's just turned into the bachelor guys showing up for a drinking weekend.
It's weighed heavily on my mind, but I think I may have to stop doing this trip altogether.6'4"

High school friend trips definitely change as you enter Your thirties. People experiment in their twenties, but by your thirties, you are the kind of man you're gonna be. Dude sounds like an azzhole.
I live on the coast and do a fair amount of boat fishing. The rules are nobody leaves til all the fish are cleaned and the boat is sparkling. Regardless of who eats fish, who doesn't eat fish, and who owns the boat. With a sixty mile trip to the Gulf Stream, that can make for some long days. But Those are just the rules. That said, if somebody acted like a drunken teenager for any reason, it would not be considered ok.
Any way you could go around your buddy and start a New tradition?
Has he mentioned it? Or Is he one of those drunks that thinks whatever happens when he's wasted doesn't count?
On a semi unrelated note, cleaning a large amount of mediocre sized crappie would suck.
On another unrelated note; Dig the thread. Fish around 80 days a year crew here. Duck hunt once a year deer hunt once a year. Mostly just so I can rationalize owning excessive amounts of firearms.
Those elk pics above make me jealous though.Last edited by Oinkerjnn; 08-28-2015 at 04:30 PM.

He's one of those drunks that thinks he has a total pass on his drunken behavior, BUT any misspoken word you make he can hold against you to the utmost.
I didn't even want to keep fish at all. I just wanted to feel a tug on my line for fun.
The reality is the wilderness retreat is getting old... I mean I live in the wilderness already. Now my daughter is getting older, she's sleeping in a bed instead of a crib... So I think as a father who's passionate about giving his daughter rich life experiences, I think it's time for me to make my vacations about her and not just me spending time with my old drunken buddies.6'4"
