yeah i have residual bloat still, from my thanksgiving insanity week. yesterday was the first day i successfully avoided sugar laden things and stuck with my calorie goal. working on that again today. one day at a time!

thanks you louise! i am really really excited for the day i can go to a real gym. i want to see other people working hard and the ego in me wants to show off and maybe someone will come up and tell me i'm going good work. of course they could easily also tell me that lifting heavy wont help me to lose weight.

i panic at the thought! i remember when my first started preschool he was sick All The Time. and i was working in intensive care so i'm sure we were cross contaminating all the time, too. i did get sick a lot that year. can't wait to do it all over again!

Hubs and I are both big readers - I seriously can't tell you how excited I was to finish my MBA and have time at night after the kids go to bed to read something I WANT to read instead of a Harvard Business School case paper haha

Yay for turkey and good protein counts!!!!
any good absorbing novels you can recommend? what about that picoult writer? hvent read her stuff but some people like it. what say you? i love the weight and feel of books. and just the aesthetics of lots of bookshelves packed with them. it isn't a home for me unless all my books are with me. i have books from when i was in second grade, still. yay for book lovers!

im so excited so wanted to share. i live in a very (very) rural area, so dont have access to a coach, much less a powerlifting coach. well, i'm visiting family over christmas break in kansas city, and i emailed a gym and this guy e-mailed me back and he said he would train me for the powerlifting technique and work on form and stuff. his creds are exactly what i'm looking for. i am pretty sure he can help with body mechanics and injury prevention.

That is wonderful that you found someone to help you when you visit your family. I am sure it will be a great help.

Girl you know i love to read..i read a little of everything. I think i have about 20 books on my Kindle now...lol

Here are a couple i am reading now

The first one is The Spirit Box
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...w_myk_ro_title

I just finished this book and i think it is one you might enjoy too
    The Middlesteins
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...w_myk_ro_title

For more than thirty years, Edie and Richard Middlestein shared a solid family life together in the suburbs of Chicago. But now things are splintering apart, for one reason, it seems: Edie's enormous girth. She's obsessed with food--thinking about it, eating it--and if she doesn't stop, she won't have much longer to live.

When Richard abandons his wife, it is up to the next generation to take control. Robin, their schoolteacher daughter, is determined that her father pay for leaving Edie. Benny, an easy-going, pot-smoking family man, just wants to smooth things over. And Rachelle-- a whippet thin perfectionist-- is intent on saving her mother-in-law's life, but this task proves even bigger than planning her twin children's spectacular b'nai mitzvah party. Through it all, they wonder: do Edie's devastating choices rest on her shoulders alone, or are others at fault, too?

With pitch-perfect prose, huge compassion, and sly humor, Jami Attenberg has given us an epic story of marriage, family, and obsession. The Middlesteins explores the hopes and heartbreaks of new and old love, the yearnings of Midwestern America, and our devastating, fascinating preoccupation with food

Let me know what you think...

Yay on finding a coach!!! That is very exciting - you will learn so much. I'm looking forward to everything that you will have to share with your buds here!

The first books I read after I finished my last tough semester (over winter break before my final but lighter semester started up) were the George R.R. Martin books (I had already "watched" the first book the spring before when they started Game of Thrones on HBO). I really did like those books a lot - more fun even that the hubs had read them before me as well as another friend at work and I got to talk through things after reading each chapter Lately I've been reading a lot of easy mindless romance novels because I can download them really cheap on my Nook whenever I can't sleep, nothing is good on TV at night, etc While I prefer to be holding a book, you can't beat a $1.99 book download when you're bored!
Please join me on my journey to find balance:

Oh! A coach! That's so exciting!!

Glad you're feeling better. Being sick is no fun at all.

I don't know about Picoult as a writer - my mother-in-law likes her, that's all I know. Haha. My current lack of reading is seriously atrocious. Perhaps I will try to remedy that today, since I'm not working. Hmmm... Ah, life. It just seems that there are always "top priority" things that keep trumping reading. Maybe I need to put reading on my "top priority" list.

    Happy Thursday!!

i did a disappearing act! i dont know what came over me, really. i guess holidays bring out family stuff. the family that i made is good and solid and i'm so grateful for my husband and kids and my in-laws, too.

this is the first time since april that i have actually lost my way, and i dont know what will happen. i have a tendency to buck up against any rules i make for myself (you must do X in order to succeed type stuff) so i am just trying this week to get through it one day at a time.

it's ok in my mind to take a couple steps back as long as i then keep pushing to get better. it is what it is, right?

    <3 to all of you.

    today
    diet so-so

30 minutes elliptical in the AM. hard work. heart rate was in the 170's most of the time instead of 150's - 160's for the same speed.

MADCOW Week 6 (let's try this one again, shall we)
    Volume Day

    Squats
    bwx5
    65x5
    90x5
    115x5
    140x5
165x4 felt weak, but was able to do them with pretty good form. keeping my elbows back is really helpful, so thanks, again, tina.

    Bench Press
    barx5
    52x5
    66x5
    80x5
lots of arm circles before my big set
95x5 -felt weak and struggled as compared to last week for sure.

    Pendlay Rows
    barx5
    55x5
    70x5
    85x5
100x5 (harder and the last rep was slow instead of explosive)

    Assistance Work
    Good Mornings - 95x10, 95x5
Situps - none. i pooped out. unsurprisingly. a week makes a big difference.

thanks for keeping the faith. even when i dont deserve it.

    my goals for this week.
1.do not terrorize myself. if i screw up, NBD. ill try and do better the next day.
2.lift three times including deadlifts. i am *still* scared of deadlifts. i am so so scared of failing 220x5. but wednesday, i need to try and psych myself up and SMASH it
3.cardio at least three times this week and do more if i feel the urge. do not push on that one.
4.drink at least three liters of water a day. havent been drinking water and i have been overeating. if i drink lots, there isnt as much room for food.

What is this scared of DL deal? Is that really the reason you're scared of them, don't want to fail a certain weight? If it would help I have several vids of myself failing at virtually every lift in existance. DL at normal "easy" weights for me killed me yesterday, and I had a nice bench press bail. Eh I say go for it even if there's a good chance you'll fail, seriously, see how far you get, and try to do it better next time, no shame in that.

Geek! Was getting worried about you here too.

I hope everything is okay with the fam stuff. Shiz happens - often for a very good reason. You will find your way, or whatever the way is that needs to just "be". Go easy on yourself on all counts. It's tough to be wonder women, we try so hard, we can't be perfect all the time

Your workout looked great. It's odd when you take a little break sometimes you come back feeling totally fresh and things go really well, other times you are frustrated with suckage the entire time. I've noticed this in both lifting and with long distance running. Rarely do I get that fresh thing happening, it's usually suckage. Makes it tough to dive back in - but alas you did it and you knocked it out!

I think Red is right - you just might have some of those excellent Ham genes in there...

Glad to see you back and a-ok Geek. Your rules are good - you will SMASH it. Glad you see that we have the faith in you, it just might help you have it too when you need it

The first books I read after I finished my last tough semester (over winter break before my final but lighter semester started up) were the George R.R. Martin books (I had already "watched" the first book the spring before when they started Game of Thrones on HBO). I really did like those books a lot - more fun even that the hubs had read them before me as well as another friend at work and I got to talk through things after reading each chapter:-) Lately I've been reading a lot of easy mindless romance novels because I can download them really cheap on my Nook whenever I can't sleep, nothing is good on TV at night, etc While I prefer to be holding a book, you can't beat a $1.99 book download when you're bored!
GOT is supposed to be good. ill have to try it. im sure i can get those cheap. in KC they have a half price books and i am amassing a list to search for when im there. i love bookstores!!

LOL at MIL liking picoult. i winder if its an older lady thing. i think i am now that older lady honestly. haha.

atlas shrugged. thats a big book. im not a fan of objectivism so never read it, but i hear its a good novel. i did see the first movie and plan on seeing the second though, despite it having an entirely new cast. people complain that it was a big preamble with nothing much of anything happening, but i liked it :it is a mystery:

    what's special about week 9?

and i'm glad 'elbows back' helps. It's also the easiest thing for me to think, (with all that weight on my back) when my chest falls/upper back loosens up. I have heard that some lifters don't like this cue, but it works for me.

I've been rereading SS. It's soo dense. but I can't believe how much I forgot, or just didn't absorb on my first read through. But it's been helpful with squat issues. It also really makes me want to learn power cleans.

Don't sweat it, won't be the last time something like that happens, just gotta roll with it when it does. Give it 110% and that's all you can do. Then BOOM - you'll have a day where everything skyrockets out of nowhere, you hit PRs all over the place, and you stand on your roof declaring yourself ruler of the universe. (Pls don't stand on the roof, it's much easier to get up there than it is to get down. )

and i'm glad 'elbows back' helps.

It also really makes me want to learn power cleans.
week 9 is just when the spreadsheet i was using stopped. i figured that would be a good time to reassess. the computer ive been using conked out and we had to reinstall the OS so i downloaded the stronglifts madcow spreadsheet and it goes 12 weeks. decided i should try for 12 weeks before resetting.

SS is dense! it's like reading james joyce. every time you pick it up you get more meaning out of it as you mature. yeah i want to learn power cleans, too. maybe that coach can teach me. if we have time after the big lifts.

    MADCOW Week 6 (again)
    DEADLIFT DAY

    Squat
    65x5
    95x5
    115x5
    115x5

    Military Press
    barx5
    55x5
    65x5
75x5 (remember that video i took of me trying 75x1 and i was struggling? WOOHOO)

    Deadlifts

    135x5
    155x5
    190x5
    221x4 and then 1/2 and another 1/2

    almost got x5

Daycare went well until naptime. The daycare called me right before my 221 deadlift to say they needed me to come get him. i am still upping to 226x5 next week even though i didn't make the lift. i'm hoping that the call just distracted me.

also with the 221 lifts, i got the first three with effort, but in a timely manner. i paused about 20 seconds before 5, trying to get my grip. my left hand is weaker and i feel like im not getting a good grip, but it's just the weight. i need to strengthen my grip big time.

i'm just plain exhausted. transitioning to daycare is tough for him and he let me know it tonight. wouldnt nap for me and then just fell apart in my arms. i held and rocked him for two hours while we listed to chopin and he sobbed and i sobbed.

it'll be worth it. the teachers said he had a blast until it was nap time.

Nice work geek! If you are eating low carbs and tiring out quickly, you may want to up your sodium intake a bit. Your electrolytes may be off some. And plenty of water is never a bad idea. cmoore made this suggestion to me for the exact same reason and it has helped me in the strength and stamina area. You may retain a bit more water though, but it is easy to shed water weight.

Geek, you are truly amazing. I wish I could adequately express the respect and admiration I have for you.

Fingers crossed the little one adjusts to nap time at daycare.

In any case, he'll be a cultured fella, listening to Chopin!

You got those deadlifts next time, without a doubt.

just wanted to thank you for all your encouragement. Getting the little ones in day care is rough, so I'll be thinking of you. It will be better than sending him straight to school (I did that with my youngest and lord have mercy!)

You are on a pretty large deficit right? That's not going to make upping the weight every week easy, I'd at least get some carbs in shortly before your workouts (ooo I think somebody else said that.) Oatmeal, fruit, toast w/ pb, etc. What grip are you using? If you're doing double overhand that is very impressive, I'd try mixed grip or get some straps if it's holding you back.

I miss having daily nap time, srs, tell your little one he better enjoy his nap time now cause in 25 yrs he'll be wishing he had nap time.
