Yea touch the hammys to calves or just go very low really. I dont think anyone is going to measure, the lower you go the more of a workout really. Just try and keep your knees behind your toes. Have a wider stance and sit with your hips not your knees.

Go down as low as anatomically possible for you, without causing injury. Remember having 200+ pounds on your back while in the deepest squating position you've ever been in may be hard to come out of. Get the flexibility and form first before you get yo ass stuck.

ass to the grass means ass to the grass, not hams to calves. and whoever said to keep a wide stance when doing this, i dont remember who, has obviously never done this before. the wider your stance the shorter your rom. heels about 12 in apart*

Hmmm. I have a wide stance when squatting. I'm 6'3" with a longer torso and shorter legs, and I simply cannot keep my stance narrow and squat properly. I go fairly wide and angle my toes out.

Why? Tell us more. Dont say something like this without backing it. In my opinion I think really wide powerlifting style squats are the best strength exercise because you use more muscles and build more power within the posterior chain. If you are going to do ass to grass style squats I recommend doing them with a low box this way you will have to explode out of the bottom. Remember to flex out of the bottom dont bounce.

What he is saying is that a lot of people who do these style of squats have a tendency to bounce out of the bottom which is never good on a joint. You must "flex" out of the hole.

They are great, I do them with lighter weight, but when I get more weight I go to parrallel. I would think that going down all the way wouldn't be as good, for building muscle because you could rest at the bottom taking all the tension off you quads IMO

you could argue that you're using more weight and peforming more work with a power stance and going parallel, but i dont think the quads are getting any type of break going ass to grass. plus this gives you twice the ROM which is also great for building muscle.

ass to grass is great for building muscle. But if you try to do ass to grass for power training, less than 6 reps, you probably will destroy your knees. I dont know about anyone else but I wouldnt want to get stuck in that position with too much weight

    .

For everyone saying that you'll destroy your knees squatting close stance, all the way down, look at any olympic lifter.
They squat that way all the time, with extreme poundages, no knee wraps.
    Example:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpA47OUohpM

Both powerlifting squats and oly squats are fine excersises, and are safe when done with correct form.
Because of back problems, I squat oly style, like the guy in the video I posted. So far I haven't had any problems.

Depends on what type of strength you're talking about.
Full squats provide strength in a much greater range of motion than squats that just break paralell.
Excersises that build strength in a large range of motion I would consider safer. When you are lifting something in every day life you will probably be less likely to injure yourself.

Secondly, the ultra wide stance of sumo deadlift and most suited squats is not a practical stance to use when actually lifting normal objects. Top powerlifters cannot even walk the weight out with the wide stance.

Now if your definition of strength is more geared towards just moving more weight, then yes, wide stance PL style suited squats would be better. But then why not do quarter squats? Really, what the best strength excersise is just depends on how you define "strength."

My ROM is BETTER the wider my stance is. Course Im taller as well. Im not gonna kill my knees by doing it with a narrow stance. I think you have to do whats best for you as far as your body type and flexibility is concerned. Just my opinion. I know what feels right and what feels wrong for me. If you widen your stance, point your toes slightly out and a pretty neutral spine though it gets up in the glutes (maximus) a bit more for me and thats exactly what im looking for. Thats just me.
