Great responses. This is a little unorthodox, and you have to be careful about it, but a night of drinking can help a ton. Alcohol is a diuretic and will flush out water from your system. You'll usually look pretty damn lean the next morning after a night of boozing with the boys. Can also try this out:

"Further, some individuals who have done dry carb-loads (high carbohydrate refeeds without drinking a lot of water) have seen them occur; presumably the body pulls water into the muscles and out of other tissues (fat cells). *In lean individuals, appearance is often drastically improved with this approach, it doesn’t do much for those carrying a lot of fat."

If you gained 4lbs while dieting, it would be an unfortunate mistake to just assume it was water weight gain. For every person who can safely attribute stalled progress to water retention or water gain, I'd wager 4-5 people just goofed up their calories. Water gain vs water retention - your best bet is to maintain the status quo for another week. If it's "water gain/retention" it'll auto-correct fairly quickly. If it's persistent - that's likely just fat.
