The Golden Era Of Bodybuilding Appreciation Society

I just thought that my reckoning is about 75% of us on here much prefer the Golden Age maybe we could post some photos and other such miscellany about our favourite old time body builders such as Dave Draper , Bill Pearl , Reg Park , Larry Scott and the like , I would do it but my photos always come out small because I am thick .

This next guy is really interesting. Bruce Randall. He served in the marines, and was embarassed when he failed at a certain weight in the squat. He decided to dedicate his time to powerlifting, and built himself up to 415 lbs at 6'2. Obviously he was very fat at this weight, but was also strong as a bull. When he accomplished what he wanted to with heavy lifting, he trimed back down to 220 and won Mr. Universe!

Dude bb get new drugs years b4 they hit the market, look at IGF-1, they were using that b4 the mid 90's, it was only approved for human use recently round 2005!

If he was a top athlete, he would know many guys in the states, Doc Ziegler developed the drug as early as 1956, trust me bro all the top guys ate it like candy as soon as it was out.

I know what you mean. I think Zeigler brought it back with him from Vienna in 1954. However, I do not believe that all the top BBers were using. I maintain that the majority of top guys were still natural from 54-58 (maybe 59). It was a very closely guarded secret at York.

Not to mention, there would have been no reason to hide use because it was legal, and not considered bad, so the fact that alot of these guys claim natural is enough to convince me.

Either way these guys were great bodybuilders!

Now, thats a back straight from the Sistine chapel has a similiar aesthetic quality to Serge Nubret's back....not massive just soooo detailed and muscular and balanced and naturally so...

    Thats an amazing back...quite extraordinary.

Triceps look great also if not huge...tie right into the back and everything flows like a natural person's physique.

I think in this case Sikboy is right...

I read the autobiography of Lance Rentzel a few years ago and it seemed by late 50s early 60s Dbol orals were completely rampant all over professional footballl....they treated them as they treat flinstone vitamins today...

Definately true. As I stated by 1959 Dbol had hit the "market" but I still feel that many of the bodybuilders (not all of course) at least 'were' natural when they had achieved a good deal of success.

Maybe I'm just gullable, but I feel Reeves and Park (IMO the two best Golden Age BBers) were natural. I just think that since the use was rampant, and accepted, there would have been absolutely no reason for them to lie by saying they never took them.

Others, like Pearl, had a great physique before ever taking steroids. Just like Grimek. He admitted to trying one dose of Dbol, and didn't like it (said it hurt his shoulder?) and never took them again.

no reason apart from keeping it a secret. not from a cheating shameful view pt but just to guard their trade secret. it was the start of the 'just take a pill' to fix anything marketing mentality of modern medicine. there were plenty of special mix nerve tonics around & dont forget they used to put ******* into coke in the 30s & 40s just for a pickme up. so its not that the golden age were afraid to try things.

true, same as today. certain amateurs prove themselves on just street stuff, do well & turn pro. ifbb then decides who has the best combination of physique potential & marketability & hook them up with the newest stuff to be at the top of the game. ever wonder how ronnie just all of a sudden exploded out of nowhere? an advanced bodybuilder doesnt just gain 20 lbs in 1 yr using the same **** he's been on for the last 5 yrs. & he had great marketability from the point of view to show the ppl that you dont have to live the life of a monk to be a big bodybuilder. he still kept doin a full time job, which is unheard of. before that many were put off spending hundreds of dollars a week on supplements thinkin that they dont have the time or energy to seriously put into their trainin to make sure the supps dont go to waste. that more than made up for any lack of smooth interview skills.
