What exactly is a "scott" curl?

the one named after larry scott.

is it a preacher/spider curl or a variation of either?

A Scott curl is a type of preacher curl. Your arms are perpendicular to the ground rather than a 45 deg angle. LOL I remember Larry Scott from when I was like 13.

They can be performed with DB's but the part of this exercise that makes it a Scott curl is the upper arm being perpendicular to the floor.

    I don't agree with this.

A preacher curl with your arms perp. to the ground is a spider curl.

Larry does these NOW, but he added them much later in his career. His original "Scott curls" were done at an angle.

*edit: in fact, he was very specific that the bench front should be convex for a proper "Scott" curl*

    right by Defiant....

this bench is still available through his website...also, when using long bar, he does NOT use a curling bar, but rather a straight bar....

he allows his arms to fully extend, and he starts the movement by curling his wrists up first!! That is why his signature wrist exercise is considered by him to be essential as a companion exercise in that you need a lot of wrist strength to be able to do a Scott curl properly.

you could read about this on his site, and he has several books on this, as well as videos.....

although not technically, a "Scott" curl, this video is a great little slice of his mentality towards bodybuilding as he patiently explains origins and insertions of the muscle to the crowd while doing spider curls..

I agree with John Gargani . . . although my definition is a bit narrower; I understood a Scott Curl to be a preacher curl with a straight bar, except that you curl the weight first with your wrists to bring in the forearms.

Thumbs up Real true Scott curl

The way most people know a Scott curl is a form of a preacher curl where ur arms are perpendicular to the floor. This is true, but what most people don't know is a certain technique Scott used to make his curls really effective, he would use a wide grip but with his elbows close together. This is hard to do and requires some flexibility don't stress if u can't do it so good but wide grip while keeping elbows close together as possible, greattt exercise
